England discover ruthless streak 1:46pm on 28 Sep 2009 Disappointed that Strauss didn't allow Smith a runner. I doubt Smith would have requested one if he didn't need it. Adding more confusion to the chaos of a late innings run chase is not something that he would do unnecessarily.

It would not have been as generous a gesture on Strauss' part as it was to recall Matthews the other day (it's the batsman's responsibility to avoid the fielders, not the other way around).
A new look for F1 01:10am on 06 Mar 2009 The black background is terrible, very 1995, especially with the light blue links. Apart from that, it's OK. Dark text on a light background is easier on the eyes.

The articles have a white background, so it's not so bad, but it just reinforces how out-of-place the F1 front page looks compared to the rest of the BBC News/Sports site.
There's lions and tigers out there 10:50pm on 26 Feb 2009 As it stands, there are very few Englishmen knocking on the door for the Lions. The idea of Toby Flood as the Lions number 10 is a bit far-fetched.

Delon Armitage might have a shout if he weren't unfortunate enough to be up against Lee Byrne and Rob Kearney in that position.

Perhaps one of the front-rowers will stake a claim, but I can't see there being any English players from 4 - 15 when the Lions front up for the first test in South Africa. They might struggle to find a place for the token Scotsman as well (Mike Blair?).
Benitez relishes vital victory 3:18pm on 02 Feb 2009 All those repeating the tired old opinion that Gerrard and Torres are Liverpool's key men have not been watching very closely this season. It's abundantly obvious that Alonso is the man who makes this Liverpool team tick and no coincidence that Liverpool's worst performances have come when he has been absent (including Wigan in midweek). Conversely, Liverpool have coped well without Gerrard and/or Torres at various times this season.

Mascherano and, to a lesser extent, Lucas have both put in good performances at times but put them together and the Liverpool midfield stagnates. I think Benitez was saving Alonso for the Chelsea game by resting him against Wigan, thinking he could get 3 points without him. That could be a costly miscalculation and one that he would be wise not repeat against Portsmouth.

If United win the league, Vidic will likely be named player of the year and rightly so. If Liverpool win, it should be Alonso.

I agree, if you're saying that KP was made captain by default, not really because he was the outstanding candidate.

Strauss would have been the safe choice but was struggling for form at the time so couldn't be guaranteed his place. He at least has captaincy experience with Middlesex.

Collingwood was a non-starter as he'd just resigned the one-day captaincy. Flintoff had been tried and found to be useless. Cook was too inexperienced and none of the other players could be sure of their places.

The bold choice would have been Rob Key - a proven captain (England U19s, England Lions and Kent). He's already knocking on the door for a recall for his batting performances and, as a bonus, is probably the only English opener who isn't completely inept in limited overs cricket. It would be seen as gamble, and it might have back-fired, but it also might have worked spectacularly.

Moores set to lose Pietersen battle 8:57pm on 06 Jan 2009 While I don't believe that Moores is the right man for the job, I find distasteful the way that the captain can seemingly force him out.

Who would replace Moores? Graham Ford? He's already turned down India and New Zealand. I can't see him wanting to be second fiddle to KP. Ashley Giles? Little experience and too close to several of the players.

It wouldn't surprise me if KP tried to get Fletcher to return. He seems keen to reassemble the Ashes 2005 team as much as possible.
Big Sam is back 10:10pm on 17 Dec 2008 #3 (stev666), Souness may not be everybody's cup of tea, but he did a good job in his stint at Blackburn. For a man who is "destined to achieve very little in the world of management", he's got a pretty impressive list of honours as a manager:

Rangers: Scottish League (x4), Scottish League Cup (x4)
Liverpool: FA Cup
Galatasaray: Turkish Cup, Turkish Super Cup
Blackburn: League Cup, promotion from the Championship

Most British managers could only dream of matching that lot.
My faith in the public is restored 11:51pm on 15 Dec 2008 #2 What about double gold medal winner Bradley Wiggins finishing 9th out of the 10 contenders? Surely this proves that the British people are prejudiced against Paul Weller look-a-likes?

The right man won in my opinion. And he won because, whether you agree with them or not, more people ranked his achievement above Hamilton's. Hamilton was unlucky that he was up against probably the strongest field ever in the SPOTY vote.

It used to be that an Olympic gold guaranteed you at least a top 3 finish, but Victoria Pendleton and Tim Brabbants didn't even make then top 10. And what about Shane Williams? Any other year it would be unthinkable that he hadn't been nominated.
When Hoy's bid almost hit the buffers 2:41pm on 12 Nov 2008 Don't they take spare bikes? I would expect that such a well-prepared and well-funded team would take at least 2 bikes for each competitor.
