Acropolis now? 2:25pm on 27 Nov 2009 #275 - it's quite simple. We have them, we're keeping them. And those diamonds. Not, be assured, for any monetary reason. They are loved here for their beauty. Every time I go to London I go to the BM and gaze at them. And despite what other posters have claimed, there is no flash photography allowed.

#278 - too bad, but we don't give in to blackmail. The Games will go ahead, whether we get some fire created by a faux-classical ceremony or not. Because London is only London - the BM's trustees come from all over the British Isles. Some won't care if there's not another Olympic Games ever!

I have already pointed out the legal burdens placed on the trustees of the BM when it comes to the contents of the museum. If the Greek side would concentrate on looking for ways these hurdles could be overcome, it would be a more sensible use of their time, instead of trying to blackmail London over some fire that most of us don't care about, and many people don't even know the significance of!

If you word an FoI request properly, you can use that legislation to force them to give you any census information from 1911 that they have concerning your family/ancestors. Someone posted about it on a 'find your ancestors' website. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I'm emailing from work and can't access the site here!

You mean apart from the Nationalist posters in here, being un-necessarily rude about the voters of Glasgow North East?? It certainly came across as a determined attempt to denigrate the constituency and its people, purely because they didn’t vote for King Salmond. They would know better than anyone if it was a ‘campaign’ or not.
Shamed into an apology 12:16pm on 16 Nov 2009 At the very least the Government should fund efforts to track down the relatives of those children who were sent to Australia. It seems the very least they can do.

As for the Christian Brothers - an Irish friend suffered abuse at their hands in 50s Ireland. The order should be broken up, its possessions sold to benefit their past victims, and any perpetrator of abuse still alive and within the order should be jailed.

Five of the seven most deprived aresas of the UK are in Glasgow. And it wasn't that long ago that a report issued that admitted that, historically, the Edinburgh-based administrations of the past had deliberately done their best to keep Glasgow in just such a position. Perhaps Glasgow feels it's time that they were recompensed for that particular piece of skullduggery?

I won't even dignify the tired old snipes about us wanting to be part of Ireland with a reply - it comes from a deep-seated well of ignorance that many Scots don't even see as bigotry, which is rather sad!

And you can be sure that people in the West of Scotland will not be persuaded to vote for parties whose supporters hold them in such obvious disdain.

Poster #15 has a point about Salmond - among my friends and family he's regarded as someone who couldn't care less about this part of the world. I'm not saying he does or doesn't, but that is a perception of him. Whether he cares enough about that to attempt to change it is another matter. Swinney, on the other hand, is held in some respect.

Near Dark is one of the best vampire movies. And I did like Gary Oldman as Dracula. Liked Angel/Buffy. And Billy the Kid v Dracula!

Striking a balance 5:17pm on 26 Oct 2009 #11 - I grew up in Govanhill. While it was never affluent, it had its nice bits. Now even those have degenerated into a slum. If people want to be offended by that description, too bad.
The day Lee Dixon took the tube to Highbury 3:36pm on 22 Oct 2009 To quote 2 banners seen at the Grove - Keep the Faith, and In Arsene We Trust. Given the choice between silverware or Arsene, I'd take the latter every time. His teams play football so beautiful that Cruyff and Co are forgotten. The man himself makes other managers look and sound like.....not so well educated chaps... (Exhibit 1 - Fat Sam)...... He has raised a generation of young players who are now playing in clubs all around the UK, something which the 'what has he done for English football' conveniently forget. Arsene is a gentleman and a scholar, and a credit to our club. I for one want him with us until either he or I are too old and senile to care!
