Cameron the Heathite? 8:12pm on 22 Oct 2009 Privatisaton in the 80s and 90s just meant that the customer ended up paying more for the executives to get higher salaries while people loose their jobs and shares and work end up getting exported to foreign shores.

The Mail managemennt want a confrontation to trigger these moves. It suits them at the fag end of this Labour government. Ironically, it would hve suited Labour three or four years ago.
Rising slowly 8:05pm on 14 Oct 2009 Fiddling the unemployment figures is nothing new. The Tories did it 20 odd times in the 80s. Then there was no longer unemployment: only 'job seekers' on an 'allowance'. It sounded like the government was doing you a favour by paying you this 'allowance'; no matter that you had made contributions to it during your time of employment and (in fact) you were entitled to it. Yet government will tell you that if you have savings,redundancy money, a partner who works or put 'unreasonable' barriers on what job you will accept you are not 'entitled'.

There is also the world of difference between a professional job and shelf stacking. The number of vacancies is meaningless if they are lousy jobs or not where you live or want to live in a free country. Family and the housing market/rental market means that moving for work is not always an option anyway.

The final factor that will deter claimants is being humiliated and treated like something somneone has stepped in by unsympathetic or untrained staff who are pursuing performance targets to get you off their books in their (now) ironically short staffed office.

If/when the Tories get in the bullying will get worse when job search is privatised and such companies are paid by results - any results.
Pay later? 9:34pm on 10 Sep 2009 It was not Labour's 'spending' that precipitated the economic crisis. It was greedy, unregulated bankers and irresponsible politicians of both politial hues on this issue. As for public spending, the Tories ideologically and financial starved public services of cash for 18 years. Labour's mistake was not to react against that sufficiently, rather to justify public spending against market 'standards' in public bodies. It is the market that has led to economic misery for millions: whether in terms of pensions, savings or jobs. Labour are a pretty unpalatable bunch, but the Tory alternative will mean millions of extra people out of work. It will also mean cuts in services to the most vulnerable and a reinforcement of opportunity for the few. If the market has failed what is the point of 'electing' a party that cannot see beyond it? The hole we are in will only get deeper.
Charging for online news 5:42pm on 26 Aug 2009 Hopefully what this will mean is that people (especially in a recession)will not want to pay for Murdoch controlled 'news' content. The most impressionable (and sometimes the poorest) in society were fed one biased view by the likes of the Sun in the 1980s resulting in Tory election victories. Murdoch was courted by Blair and it was the Sun 'wot won it' in giving us Tory Tony. Net result? A country as messed up now as it was 20 years ago. And Murdoch thinks I will pay for newspeak.
Age of austerity 8:36pm on 23 Apr 2009 The Tories outcutting public services over and above Labour cuts will cost this country more. Not just in terms of benefits, but in terms of the physical and mental health of those affected and crime and disorder spiralling as a result. Applying for JSA is deliberately being made a humiliating and difficult experience - money that those who have paid their taxes are entitled to. Such a strategy to save money will drive people to their own destruction.

We need to change to a more productive and worthwhile economy. Not just reducing waste in public expenditure (without putting people on the scrapheap who will need state intervention to support their lives far in excess of what their wages would have cost)but also in terms of local and British food and energy production, marketing, green technology, ICT etc.

If we all - as some of the moaning rich earning more than £50k seem to be suggesting - just want 'cuts' and no investment then this country will be doomed as an international entity in all fields. We had a taste of that under Thatcher: the global economic situation is now far worse and the stakes far higher. I am no big fan of new Labour but it seems to me that the budget is trying to tackle the situation while also trying to invest in training and youth.
To stimulate or not to stimulate? 8:16pm on 24 Mar 2009 Gordon Brown's problem is that he is increasing public spending on the back of borrowing without managing the nationalised banks through government interference to kick start lending to the wealth creating sector, without taking out unpopular and unsustainable public expenditure on things like ID cards and Trident, without having 'New Deal' style policies to tackle unemployment while investing in this country's future, without taxing the rich sufficiently, without dealing without realising the fundemental flaws in the market economy system, without having a 'Buy British' campaign, without getting British jobs back to Britain: without a prayer of being re-elected condemning us all to an ideology that will pay back through making the most vulnerable suffer.

Ministerial post 'dehumanising' for Digby Jones 6:18pm on 15 Jan 2009 This is what you would expect from a Tory brought into a 'Labour' government.

Consider what Civil Servants really are. They are not just the people that Digby Jones would have come across, they are people like Job centre staff; outsourced, ut or overstretched, especially in light of the rising unemployment the country faces.

This is what the likes of Mr.Jones wants, for people to turn on each other (eg the wider public on public servants) rather than blaming the unrestrained business culture that got our country into this mess.
Young and unemployed 12:24pm on 20 Dec 2008 The young peeson using the text slang would be unlikely to use this at an interview or on a job application so it is nonsence for people to think otherwise.

What this does show - in a so-called free society - is the daft interview/recruitment system. People have to stretch the truth, tolerate lousy jobs, get degrees and debts they don't want and pretend they are something they are not in order to get a job. And then the problems of low wages, bad employers and workplace mindgames can begin!

No wonder generations of young people become disollutioned.

As for that guy who recommended they all join the army this rather reminds of the point that not everyone is suitable for every job. Some people do no have the disposition or belief to join the army anymore than they do to do, say, bar work. So the irony is, then, that people are expected to lie on applications and in intervews to get jobs they are not suited for. And then employers complain about attitude and aptitude!
Crucial duel 7:47pm on 30 Oct 2008 Labour are refusing to try and save Scottish banking jobs. This fact and other right wing policies (ID cards, Trident, middle eastern wars, workfare, student fees) should make people think carefully before voting Labour.
