Benitez faces biggest test 09:46am on 21 Oct 2009 Phil, I'm a Man U fan but I gotta defend Ngog - he was not the weak link in the team last night. The service he got was AWFUL. How many balls did he get to feet? Liverpool barely strung 2 passes together in the opposition's half. Service was mostly a long ball from the back, or a hurried flick from the midfield to nowhere in particular. Scraps in other words. Benitiz continues to surprise me with his purchasing of very average players in the 0-6m bracket (Riera, Lucas, Voronin for example) that wouldn't get near the Man U, Chelsea or Arsenal's bench.

Lyon weren't great either might I add. Low quality game allround.
Brilliant Barcelona outclass Man Utd 3:26pm on 28 May 2009 Phil, don't exaggerate. It was one game. A one-off game can go either way. There is no big gulf between the sides. That's like saying Liverpool are a class above Man U after they beat them 4-1 at OT. Over the course of the season United proved otherwise.

Barca are the best team in Europe at keeping the ball. So if you go 1-0 down to them, it's very hard to get back in the game, as they get 10 behind the ball and keep it when they win it. Then as teams chase the game they are experts at finding the gaps - like for their 2nd last night. If Vidic & Van Der Sar hadn't made uncharacteristic mistakes for the first goal, it would have been a very different game. But it was a key moment that changed the game.

Liverpool make Ferguson suffer 08:27am on 16 Mar 2009 Let's not get carried away. Liverpool have showed many times in the past that on their day they can match anyone. That's why they've been such a force in the CL the last few years. They're just too one-dimensional to do it over a whole season with their current squad. The argument of "Liverpool winning the league next season as Benitez knows which areas will need strengthened" doesn't hold up. He buys too many average players. Riera, Lucas, Kuyt..hard-working players but not in the top bracket.

I think complacency cost United on Saturday, just as it did in the reverse fixture at Anfield. After so many wins on the bounce perhaps they thought it would be business as usual. Liverpool were more up for it than Utd, not something you can say too often about Fergie's teams. However, talk of jitters and nerves is q surprising considering Utd's experience with championship run-ins. Utd still possess by far the strongest squad and I expect them to still win the championship comfortably.
Strauss's nearly-men have work to do 1:19pm on 13 Mar 2009 Any idea why Chris Tremlett didn't make the tour? He's a dangerous bowler and was playing consistently when he got a run in the team. Perhaps it's his injury record. I certainly think he's a bigger threat than Harmison or Khan. With his height he could pose the Aussies problems. Harmison's halcyon days unfortunately seem to be well behind him.

Of the rest, Charlie Shreck's consistently taken wickets over the past 2 seasons, and done well with the Lions. He must be knocking at the door. Surprising that Khan got an opportunity before he did.
Man Utd look unstoppable 2:16pm on 05 Mar 2009 I would agree that Utd have been 'grinding out' results this year, winning a lot of games by the odd goal.
So the fact that Utd are 7 pts ahead w a game in hand, without getting out of 2nd gear (certainly in the attacking third) really tells us that Utd are miles ahead of the rest of the league and likely to stay there for several years yet.
Their 1st XI is stronger than everyone else's, their 2nd XI is also stronger than most team's 1st XI, and their 1st & 2nd XI's are very interchangeable - one just doesn't notice any impact when they change the team around.
Top three face crucial tests 1:39pm on 09 Jan 2009 At last a journalist who's recognized the following:
1. Man Utd have already played all the big away games already, and the top 3 all have to go to Old Trafford.
2. Chelsea have never replaced Duff and Robben.
3. Deco is wildly overrated.

Good article. I expect Utd to pull away from the rest in the next few months, they have far more quality & variety than the other two.
Liverpool top, but for how long? 08:27am on 02 Dec 2008 Liverpool have had the easiest fixture list.
Man U have already played away to the rest of the top 6: Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Villa & City..

I can see Utd putting a run together and pulling away from both Liverpool and Chelsea. Liverpool just don't have the creativity to consistently break down well organised teams.

What happened to Carlos Alberto, the brilliant young brazilian that deserved most of the credit (yes, much more than Deco!) for Porto's 2004 Champions League win?
The ball used to stick to his quick feet.. He seems to have disappeared, and is nowhere near the Brazil team...?
