He apologised to American Special Olympians? That's a kind of presidential phrasing isn't it? 'My fellow Americans', they say it all the time, if he'd been on the BBC, or a TV show that wasn't a deeply American institution like Jay Leno, then you might have a point.

I don't understand that. A person's disabled identity is only part of them. You're right when you say the common ground of disability transcends age, class, ethnic and national groups. Just because we have that in common doesn't mean we should ditch everything else that influences how we think.

And this is what you forget when you say that you don't think it's justifiable for disabled people to insult each other. It's not *nice* for anyone to insult anyone but it's not going to stop. Everyone's a product of the world around them. no one grew up in a crippled hippie commune where we respect our diverse brothers and sisters. The bottom line is, 17 year olds who snap their spine don't understand their peers who've been special educated since nursery. Their 'groups' are drawn along medical lines but the lack of understanding is rooted in their life experience. Their relative experience of prejudice and exclusion. And that is determined by any number of things, not just the circumstances of their impairments.

Heck, i've been on Ouch for years and i STILL don't quite understand the concept of 'invisble disability' , or having your impaiment questioned. Some might say that doesn't matter, that we are subject to the same social barrirers. For the most part, i agree. But the cracks still show. It's not a competition, but does that mean we shouldn't ever talk about it?

I was never a natural born brownie but when i was there, i would want to do the badge criteria regardless of whether it actually made sense. I think the time she spent with your son is more valuable to kids' disability awareness than anything on that list, the badge doesn't matter.

Disabled Shocker! 5:41pm on 23 May 2008 to be honest, while disability might look strange written in the same sentence as alcoholism and STDs, it *is* personal medical information in this instance, so for the purposes of that article it fits.

disability isn't a matter of shame for a lot of people but most of the time they can decide whether those details are floating around in public or not.

i'm not in any way shape or form endorsing the sun but i think you missed the point.

The whole basis of my post was to question why I still had a tendency to make medicalised judgements on *impairment* , despite believing *disability* to be an oppressive social force.

if you have scepticism and prejudice towards a particular impairment, that surely affects to what extent you can see them as socially disadvantaged and in turn include them in that group.
