The Goodwin pension questions 7:37pm on 27 Feb 2009 This is becoming hilarious! But it may do some good in opening people's eyes to the starkly different rules for the "haves" versus the "have-nots". Time for change. Also time to bring all possible legal threats to bear against Fred and his ilk.

In modern business and in politics we seem to be suffering from a sore lack of natural leadership. Our politicians are now glorified civil servants with no genuine vision of their own. Most people running banks appear to be incompetent bean-counters.

Natural leaders will tend to do well, be respected and achieve things in life. And why not reward such people within reason?

However, we don't have many natural leaders: instead we have modern managers (or management teams). The latter think they can achieve results, not by leadership but by ineffectual bullying, by massaging statistics, by treating staff as "resources" rather than people, by constructing artificial internal markets and budgets, by out-sourcing, by lying and by greed.

Please be aware, as a basic rule of thumb - this new breed of managers are pure and utter scumbags, the higher level they attain, the worse they become (in fact they have to be like that in order to become new-style managers in the first place). The only place they will lead us is "up the garden path".

We need some proper leaders to come forward in public life.
Fred Goodwin to receive £650,000 for life 10:49pm on 25 Feb 2009 There is one good aspect to this: before now, the average punter didn't really think much about the remuneration of the high-flying few. As long as we were doing "ok", we didn't seem to mind too much that others were doing fabulously well. In fact we allowed it as their reward for us doing "ok". Now we see that they are still doing fabulously well, even after it is plain to see that we are NOT doing "ok". Now we see the naked greed for what it really is. Now we see the face of evil (what else can you call this sort of behaviour while the country suffers?). Rise up fellow peasants!
Brown's cautious bank reforms 10:22am on 22 Feb 2009 So essentially, the banks can behave pretty much as before but now they are underpinned by tax-payer guarantee, That doesn't seem right now, does it?

I too work for a financial institution which pays a contractual bonus each year. Employees get a percentage of salary depending on how they have performed as individuals. (Some more senior staff get a multiple of double or quadruple the percentage that ordinary staff get, but that's another argument).

However the overall size of the bonus chest is determined by how well the company has done ie zero profit =zero bonus chest.

I would especially agree with those who say that companies that are essentially bust should pay no bonuses at all. And if their lower paid workers suffer this year, then that can be addressed by the new management paying them a decent living wage in future so they don't have to rely on grace and favour bonuses. This could be funded by reigning in the bonus of more senior staff.

Well, I've lost count of the number of corporate motivational seminars I've been to, where they say money in itself is not a motivator. Hmmm ... easy to flog that idea to your staff while your nose is buried in a large trough of cash. Similarly, when unions ask for a reasonable rise for their members, management call it greed. But when executive remuneration is concerned the "G" word is never mentioned - it's all about retaining the best staff - by paying them bonuses that are several multiples of their salaries (which are already astronomical in comparison with their employees' salaries). The hypocracy is breathtaking. Then that idiot Darling says that bank tellers are poorly paid and need their meagre 10% bonus. IF THEY WERE PAID A DECENT WAGE THEY WOULDN'T NEED TO DEPEND ON THEIR BONUS. Let's continue hounding and humiliating these corporate scoundrels - they deserve the noose. Auntie's dilemma 2:30pm on 30 Oct 2008 Does anyone honestly think Ross is a better a film reviewer than Barry Norman or Mark Kermode? Or is he a better interviewer than Parkinson or Wogan? He's just in insufferable arrogant tosspot who has had it coming to him for a long time. It says a lot for the BBC that this is the kind of person they make their most highly paid entertainer. Thankfully they still have others to compensate (Simon Schama's "American Future: a History" and "Stephen Fry in America")
Shock and ordinary 10:27am on 30 Oct 2008 Actually I have a theory regarding humour - I'm sure others may agree with me here: I have NO PROBLEM AT ALL with offensive humour ... AS LONG AS IT IS REALLY FUNNY.

However if it isn't funny then the comedian deserves to reap the whirlwind of outrage and obviously the more offensive the "joke", the more stormy the resulting fallout will be.

So comedians take note - if you are going to be outrageous, be sure to be funny ... OR ELSE!
