Dear Andy, can we talk? 3:50pm on 30 Dec 2008 Far too nice to the idiot. But to be fair, he is only running decoy for the EU and Labour's desperate desire to stop internet criticism of government - the UK one in Brussels as well as Labour's parish council in Westminster. When the scheme fails to "protect" a single child, it won't matter, because the scheme is really intended to pre-vet all content, and ban any content critical of labour and the EU.

African states have a bare half century of independence and self government. They have no roots in what we call democracy. That doesn't excuse the appalling governance, but it helps to explain. (Like the Gulf states, where camels to Cadillacs in a generation created huge problems).

There is no point the colonial powers beating themselves up over this situation. They were chucked out when their 20th century concern for "human rights" and "democracy" meant they had to leave instead of subdue.

But there is not the depth of "democracy", "respect of individuals", the inbred history of "western values", value for life, too few educated (in country or out) politicians, to make a difference in the direction "we" would like to see the continent move.

It will go on as it is. They will go on murdering their enemies for a hundred years. They do not see that is wrong. Rwanda, Congo, Sudan. That is Africa, that is how it is.

So Mugabe? He is African, he is one of the brothers, and the other brothers see nothing wrong with what he does, killing his people, making himself rich, bleeding the enemy tribes, maintaining power by brute force, with his thugs, his threats, his power of life and death.

That is not how the powers left the continent on independence, some sort of carelessness or failure, it was there before they arrived, and it reverted when they left. Africa must address its own problems, we are helpless to change them.

They will always protect their own, and to them Mugabe is a hero. They come from the "freedom struggle" generation, they will never do anything against one of their own. The world has been saying "enough" for years, African leaders - not even secretly - adore the absolute power and tyranny he exemplifies. He is one of the brothers, they will never act against him. All their words are weasel, all their "concerns" subterfuge, all their consultations mere window dressing.

Africa is a profoundly sick continent, and it is nothing to do with distant colonial times, it is to do with the current leaders.
The BBC licence free? 6:04pm on 24 Nov 2008 I was MASSIVELY irritated that when I paid a UK licence, I still wasn't allowed to access iplayer from overseas. Appalling decision. I would be happy to pay 10 quid a month for full access from overseas.

Does it bother you? 5:35pm on 30 Jul 2008 That cop said it. An arrest that gets you onto the DNA database is no predictor of a subsequent offense. That means they also accept thast just as there may have been no adequate reason for the arrest, (it's regardless of conviction) and it doesn't mean you should be a suspect for life, because you may never commit one. The DNA data base is not about crime, it is about controlling the UK population - remarkably facist when you consider it.

(I paraphrase) Today, thanks in no small part to the EU, Nu labour, and the BBC, it is becoming almost illegal and certianly damn near impossible to voice dissent to the "orthodoxy", especially that of the Islington classes. As for, "There were lies told and that is inexcusable", may I refer you to our rulers the EU commission, and to countless UK politicians, routinely caught telling huge untruths. We are not stupid, we know a porky when we hear it. And we also know, if you will pardon the intrusion of a fact, that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped dramatically. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.59C up to 0.75C, a DROP in global temperature large enough to erase nearly all the "man made global warming" recorded over the past 100 years. Get used to it, MMGW is merely a theory. Rather like the Pope's ... vide: Galileo.

His thugs will continue to kill MDP supporters and anyone they dislike. Not a doubt, not a suspicion. That is what they will do. Tsangerai will probably have a car accident. Only when Mugabe dies will Zim change at all, and then there will be Rwanda style chaos. The army knows it, the people know it, our politicians know it. Why pretend? This is Africa, as it always was, and it is the Africa the British handed over to people like Mugabe all over the continent.
Monday, 21 July, 2008 11:19pm on 21 Jul 2008 The BBC again deliberately presenting those who dispute Man Made Climate Change as some sort of dangerous lunatics. Please let dissenters have their voice too - the BBC is far too find of mocking people they disagree with. The headline was that the programme did not mislead. It didn't. It was if anything too kind to the Man made Climate Change brigade, who are fundamentalists and pretty rabid about their pet theory. Just as a point of fact, recent authoritative (NASA) measurements have showed that there has been global cooling for the last 50 years.
