Brazil refine tactics for World Cup 6:12pm on 16 Nov 2009 For those that complain of the demise of the Beautiful Game that Brazil used to play need to understand that it was not by choice that they've taken a less attractive, more direct approach. The officiating has changed in the past 20-30 years to allow defenders to grab, clutch, hold and obstruct quick and highly skilled attackers. Teams can no longer play the beautiful passing and interchanges without being perisitently fouled or held by defenders. You cannot win the WC with attractive football. You have to be willing to play long-ball and use pace, strength and rugged defending. Until FIFA makes the decision that they want to return to attractive football with skill featured over athleticism, then we'll continue to see football look more and more like rugby.
Climate plans part of wider battle over American freedom 7:15pm on 03 Nov 2009 These people say they carry a copy of the Declaration of Independence but apparantly, they don't read it. Otherwise, I'm not sure how they could be against the Gov't being involved Health Care, Education, Security, Retirement(Social Security), Communication, Transportation. The Declaration states the Gov't is formed to "secure" these rights...If the Founding Fathers were alive today, they'd be shouted down as "Socialists".

Life = health care, security
Liberty = Education, Transportation, Communication
Pursuit of Happiness = Retirement and all of the above

Agassi confession lengthens shadow of doubt 5:22pm on 28 Oct 2009 Andre Agassi makes this revelation about Crystal-Meth just as he is releasing a new book. Do you think he might be trying to sell more books? And it appears that Mr. Overend fell for it hook-line-and sinker....on dry land. However, he's got plenty of company.
Why 'adolescent America' has to grow up 5:18pm on 28 Oct 2009 The media gives the attention to the attention seekers, so maybe news organizations and journalists need to "Grow Up". Two weeks of coverage on the "Balloon Boy", Two months of coverage on Michael Jackson. The "news" organizations in the US are rediculous. It's info-tainment. Newspapers are going the way of the dinosaur and investigative journalists and great writers have been replaced with the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Lou Dobbs and Glen Beck. The news or lack-there-of has a profound affect on society.
The Merkel enigma 5:43pm on 28 Sep 2009 Germany should beware of shifting too far to the right when it comes to de-regulation and lower taxes. Unless they want to emulate the USA during the Bush Administration.
Is race a factor in Obama protests? 6:30pm on 15 Sep 2009 The critics of President Obama are largely the same demographics that didn't vote for him in the first place (white, suburban-rural, older, economically stable). These are the people in American that fear change the most and feel that they have the most to lose. I didn't see any persons of color in the tea-party marches. No African-Americans, Latinos, Asians.....and not many young people. And you also didn't see persons of color protesting Health-Care reform at the town hall meetings. In summary, I'd have to conclude that race is the driving factor in the harsh, vocal criticism of The President.
Healthcare row gets physical? 6:21pm on 03 Sep 2009 I pretty much agree 100% with post 14 from jsuman but I'll add that the educational system in the US is failing and parenting has taken a back seat to working full time and buying stuff that you don't really need. American children fall further behind with each generation. When you combine the inflamatory media with a population that is becoming increasingly less-educated, along with a regular exposure to violence in movies, TV, music, news, etc. Then it's not surprising that this debate has become physical and ugly.
Club v country takes new twist 6:30pm on 17 Aug 2009 Let's face it, like Club Football, International Football runs the risk of being corrupted by wealth. There is far more wealth in Europe than in S. America. This is about Rich vs Poor in both club and country. The only reason for a young Brazilian to even consider leaving Brazil is money. And most definitely the only reason for a young Breazilian player to play international football for a European side, is money. If they get exposure by playing for say....Croatia, the young player may get a contact with a big european club. When you grow up poor and your family back home is still in poverty, then playing for the country where you born is not as important as making money.
How will the Premier League unfold? 6:32pm on 11 Aug 2009 You must have a soft spot for Harry Redknapp to pick Spurs in the top 6. They'll be struggling for a mid-table spot as usual.
Chelsea appear to have the depth of talent to win the title. Man Utd won't miss C. Ronaldo as much as many people think. But I think they'll miss Tevez more than they think. In any case, they should finish no lower than 2nd and will be right there along with L'Pool to push Chelsea. Dare I say it, Man City will be 4th. With Arsenal, Everton, Villa and a surprise team Fulham fighting for 5th and 6th.
South America's wayward footballing stereotypes 6:07pm on 03 Aug 2009 It's difficult not to generalise but I think the fans in England and the FA do have a preference towards the "kick and rush". They have a preference towards a very physical style of football (no blood, no foul)and do not protect skilled players. In fact, much derision is hurled at highly skilled players in the PL if they do not "fight through" challenges. In Italy, Spain, Brazil and Argentina, players are given more freedom without defenders obstructing, clutching, grabbing, kicking shins and pulling shirts.
