Mixed fortunes for England duo 3:20pm on 15 Nov 2009 The issue with england historically is that our strength in depth is weak. This is in part due to the fact english players don't go to other top leagues and very few are a regular part of the champions league which means they don't play against the best at club level every season.

for context - my personal ENGLAND I v ENGLAND II no injuries.

COMMENTS:

I am not asking for a granular disection of my 1st v 2nd pick. My main point is this:

in pick 1 - 9 of the 11 are guaranteed starters in sides playing CL football, and foster is getting a run with man U currently.

in pick 2 - 3 of the 11 are in sides playing CL, if one includes beckham post move - and there are also several people who are not regularly making first team club football either.

If you compare this with say spain - where you have fabregas struggling to make the national side - that illustrates the problem. Our first team is a match for anyone - but the gulf in quality between first pick & second means we need alot of luck regarding injuries & suspensions to progress far.

Champions League? You're having a laugh 3:44pm on 18 Sep 2009 I would like to see the group phase changed to 16 groups of 3 teams, where only the winner of the group gets through, and the second place team gets a europa spot. This would have the following impact:

1 - more teams could be included from further afield.
2 - competition becomes more fierce - if any side loses a game in the group phase they are under pressure straight away.
3 - it means sides that don't have as big squads are more able to compete as there are less games to play.
The New Capitalism - in video 8:10pm on 21 Dec 2008 The main issue is that credit was fuelling spending.

Now that credit is much harder to come by banks will be looking for yield off their reduced lending capabilities, meaning that once things settle down, lending will be something that is done for essential purchases - but the era of buying goods / holidays on CCs is over as it will be too expensive.

What this will do to the high-street no one knows - but there is no doubt that the explosion in the retail sector was directly linked to the rise of credit...

3 consecutive QFs is our most consistent ever run - he also had one of the best ever qualifying records as an england manager.

He took over when we were in the doldrums (remember Kevin Keegan...) and built a team that had some fantastic results:

Germany 1 England 5
Argentina 0 England 1

to name just a few.

So he got too cosy and relaxed with the players in the last WC, even then - we were only knocked out on pens...

Phil... you have a selective memory when it comes to Eriksson = obviously McLaren was a disaster...
Liverpool send out title message 04:33am on 27 Oct 2008 On current form Liverpool are capable of winning their next 8 PL games.

If Liverpool can get to the Arsenal game with 20+ points from these 8 games, they would be in the driving seat...

As a sidenote - whenever a side has ended up with 90+ points they have always won the title - and at the moment Liverpool are the only team in the prem on course for that feat...

Keegan exit turns heat on Ashley 4:02pm on 02 Sep 2008 I have to believe Ashley has someone in mind to replace Keegan other than Wise...
Capello may regret Owen exclusion 12:15pm on 01 Sep 2008 didn't Capello say he was only going to pick players with full fitness - as an absolute policy?

Also that no spots were guaranteed?

I am a big fan of Owen, but have to respect the position of Capello. Newcastle have been shafted re Owen a few times, so for them it must be great to have an England Manager who does not rush Owen back to the fray when he has only started 1 game back.

Also Owen is injury prone and 28, so surely we need to expose other strikers to this environment or we will be in a position (like last WC) where Owen gets injured and nobody is fit to make the step up.

I am sure that once Owen has been starting regularly and is back to 100% match fitness Capello with be playing him regularly.
A crucial week for Spurs 2:57pm on 25 Aug 2008 My view is that Spurs should sell Berba overseas.

Whilst a club cannot keep a disruptive player - A disruptive player needs to be shown that if they cross the club... and say they want to leave... be careful what they wish for.

I am sure they could come to an agreement with one of:
Barca, Real, Valencia, Bayern, Juve, AC, Inter
