Why now for Shearer and Newcastle? 04:22am on 02 Apr 2009 Smart move by Ashley - he knows that Newcastle are doomed, so he makes a popular change to placate the fans, who will welcome Shearer with dumb glee as they welcomed Keegan, and they will forget about blaming Ashley too much when relegation is confirmed.

Newcastle provide a valuable service to fans of other clubs, as a source of great amusement.
England still need Owen 7:24pm on 31 Mar 2009 Michael Owen is as committed to England as Alan Shearer was; that is, as committed as someone who retired from international football early so he could extend his money-spinning club career. Owen would like to be back in the England side because international football is a good shop window for your price in the transfer and wages markets. A couple of England games would help Owen's wage packet when he leaves Newcastle in the summer.
