Bitter recriminations at the Bridge 09:05am on 07 May 2009 All I can say is that they all ought to have a try at putting up with refereeing standards in the lower reaches of the Football League. Then they might really have something to feel aggrieved about!
The wrong impression 1:13pm on 20 Mar 2009 I would say that this episode has been typical of all governments since the early 1980s. They have been much more concerned about appearance than about reality.
Should there be a winter break? 12:54pm on 08 Jan 2009 There is only a point in having a winter break if you can make it long enough to cover the whole of the "bad weather" period. Actually it is frozen pitches that are the real danger, rather than the weather on the day.

On the continent, many of the lower leagues have a break from about Christmas through to early March, but then they have smaller divisions (Luxembourg has something like 14 teams per division, and the German Regionalligen mostly have 18 or so).

If you do have a short break, then the coaches have some difficulty in maintaining player fitness. Hence rather than actually having a full break, the squads are often taken to meaningless tournaments in Hong Kong etc, rather like in a pre-season.
An end to "victimhood"? 08:28am on 07 Nov 2008 What Obama's success has shown is that the US Constitution and its preamble can be made to work for all and not just for some.

It might succeed in ending "victimhood" in the USA - I certainly hope so, because I think that often this victimhood is what holds many people back.

As far as exporting that to the UK is concerned - we can't, because we have no constitution!
Obama shackled by debt 3:50pm on 05 Nov 2008 Sure, Obama has acquired a difficult situation - but he does start off with an enormous amount of goodwill, even from the vast majority of Republicans. That should provide him with the breathing space and leeway to make awkward decisions and take actions which might otherwise prove unpopular.

Further, one thing which struck me during my recent (short) stay in the US was how good Obama is in explaining situations in clear language. That should help tremendously in sellling policy changes.

Paula deserves praise and plaudits 8:09pm on 18 Aug 2008 Post 149 - I entirely agree about the lack of attention given to the excellent run of Yamacouchi (sp). It has gone almost entirely unremarked.

Likewise the splendid winning run by Constantina Dita - an athlete who has performed consistently well for many yeas without getting the recognition she deserves.
Why is it so hard for Sotherton to throw the javelin? 8:05pm on 18 Aug 2008 An excellent technical article from Steve Backley. Back in my more athletic days - some 15 years ago now - I used to occassionally watch Steve training at the Dartford track. What always surprised me was his speed - I was about 45 years old at the time and could do 200m in a little over 30 secs; OK, he was a lot younger, but that was about his warm up speed.

What always impressed me was the amount of analysis he did in his training - he would ask other athletes training at the same time how far he was off a straight line when he practised the throwing action, and things like that.
