What makes a good manager? 10:05pm on 09 Dec 2008 44 - Mate, that's a really top analysis. What don't you like about the blog? It's well written (better than the average article in, say, the Nottingham Evening Post), thoughtful, and above all interesting. There are clearly a lot of people enjoying it regularly. So why do you feel the need to disparage Gavin's journalistic prospects?

I think it's because people are fed up with the OS making it difficult to use data, and with the high cost of licence payments. It seems to me that there must be a better way than the current Trading Fund status. The OS also "stand up to" other Government departments, local government, NGOs, and private British companies. This mires everyone in copyright issues and slows down innovation.

A company like Harvey Maps has to bend over backwards to prove that they are not using OS-sourced data for their outdoor leisure maps.

I suspect that eventually the OS will find themselves overtaken by a combination of private commercial mapmakers and openstreetmap. There is already reasonable SRTM-derived contour mapping freely available. With GPS it is fairly easy to map linear features on top. The OS may end up with a niche market of very precise mapping. They appear to be trying to protect their very privileged near-monopoly.
The mapping mess - Google v OS 4:48pm on 17 Nov 2008 The problem is not with Google's terms and conditions - it is with the OS, because the Government wishes them to make a profit, so they see Google as competition. If the Government would return the OS to being a tax funded non-profit organisation, the data could be made available at the cost of reproduction (effectively nothing).

This would have enormous benefits to local government, who would no longer have to pay large licencing fees to the OS, and also pave the way for private companies to use the data in imaginative ways, generating profits and paying more tax to the Government. Benefits all round.
On and off the (metaphorical) bench 9:28pm on 16 Nov 2008 When I used to watch Notts County regularly in the 70s, there was always someone in the crowd who shouted "You're rubbish, Notts". This happened whether they were winning or losing! Probably a Forest fan.

The only time I think it's OK to boo your own player is when they are obviously not trying - and even then it's possible they are not fully fit.

South Africa hold whip hand 8:59pm on 19 Jul 2008 Peter_Sp, you obviously know nothing at all about Pattinson (not even his name!) - Pattinson is a swing bowler, and has been pretty successful for Notts. Who has swung the ball significantly this innings? Flintoff? Anderson? Broad?

The ball doesn't tend to swing at Headingley without cloud cover, and the clouds which covered Leeds yesterday converniently disappeared today to allow the South African batsmen a nice swing-free sunny day to bat on. None of the England bowlers threatened a great deal today, though tighter bowling from Broad and Pattinson would have been helpful. But Pattinson has been brought in to his own astonishment, and it would have been remarkable if he had overcome his nerves sufficiently to bowl at his best. He could have done an awful lot worse.
South Africa hold whip hand 8:41pm on 19 Jul 2008 So Aggers, "Broad, though, is very young and learning fast. He will have bad days as well as good as he discovers his consistency." But Pattinson was apparently "out of his depth".

Pattinson may be a few years older than Broad, but he is considerably less experienced, both in First Class and in Test cricket. Will he not also have his bad days as well as good? He didn't look out of his depth to me, though he wasn't particularly threatening either. He has made a decent, hard working debut, and it is unfair on him to blame him for the vagaries of the selectors.
