Apple's "brave" price rise 2:19pm on 05 Mar 2009 Skashion; You are right that both Alienware and Apple do overcharge for their products.

However, it's not just as simple as that. They do provide a much better package overall. You can buy a top end HP PC that will outclass Mac's for the money, but you open that box and see how you feel.

It's just another beige* box with no life. From the first moment you open the Mac box, you know someone has thought about it and it almost feels personal.

Is that worth the extra money, not on it's own, no.

*OK, it's not beige any more and it might actually look good!*

Should Apple be allowed to legally enforce what hardware you can use, sure. It's their product, to do with what they want.

It would be great if I could get any hardware and put OS X on it, but then maybe it wouldn't work as well.

So that's the trade off and I am happy to live with it.

If you need the bleed'in edge and want to have access to every bit of hardware, you won't be able to with Apple.

Oh, and I apologise for saying you inferred that Windows was best, I just read back and I must have misread it.

Of course on the back of all this, I honestly do hope that Windows 7 is great. Competition is good for every one. Whether it would tempt me back to Windows is a different matter.

You talk about the 'Apple tax' and the fact that you pay more for the Apple computers that you can get cheaper elsewhere.

Hey, guess what. Apple build quality products, much like some PC makers, like AlienWare; they are not cheap either. I can get the spec of an AlienWare PC and build it myself at a much lower cost.

You are paying for quality, support and service.

And it's a little bit of a contradiction that you think that Apple should have OS X released for any hardware, but then say that OS X is more stable because of it's limited hardware base.

So, I think I'll stick with Apple Mac; reliable, easy to use and very productive.

What's the point of all that great hardware if the OS isn't stable? The best computers are the ones that you get most out of and in my experience, that's a Mac.

Oh and you *did* infer that Windows was better because it was more popular, maybe you didn't mean to, but you did.

It's quite simple really. If you want a games PC, you have to choose Windows. For anything else, I would choose a Mac any day.

Firstly, I don't know how anyone mistook Rory's article to think that he thought this was a good move.

Apple Mac computers appeal to certain people that just want things to work. I switch about 18 months ago, paid more for my Mac than I could of got a 'standard' PC for, but I have never looked back.

Yes, it limits my hardware choice, well, I did get a Mac Mini afterall! But, I know OS X works brilliantly and easily straight away.

To a degree, Windows has problems because it supports so many products. Well, maybe they should reconsider that, so they can make a more stable OS? I'm hoping for big things out of Windows 7, I really am.

leunvcy, to answer your question. Mac hardware may be similar to what you can buy from most PC stores, but it is of better quality construction. That's not to say there are not PC makers out there who don't make quality PC's, take AlienWare for example; but you always pay the premium.

OS X is a great operating system and it is what you use everyday. So you pay the premium for a better build of computer and the ability to run OS X. Believe me, if you switch you won't look back.

Now obviously, if you love to tinker with hardware or play all the latest games, the Windows is your best bet. But for most other things, I would really recommend a Mac.

And no, I don't think there price increases are a good idea and I was hoping for something a bit special from them, but as has been pointed out, they are here to make money. Let's see if this plan works.

Oh and Skashion; the computer is the software; so the best computers have the best software. OS X beats Windows, that's not subjective, that's fact. Just because gamers can only use Windows as it's the 'popular' choice, because of a stupid mistake by IBM, way back when! Just because more people use it, or more people develop for it, doesn't make it the best.

Yes, hardware matters, but Mac's hardware is great for what's needed.

Both OS's have there good and bad points, but Windows has more bad points.

It's amazing how people still hate Mac's even though they've never used them, or has a friend who has had issues so they must be rubbish. Love it.

Buy a Mac, be happy. Buy a PC, be happy.

Just don't judge until you've used and enjoyed the Mac experience.

This isn't the last MacWorld, just the last one that Apple will be attending.

I'm hoping for some true innovation or just something that no one has guessed at or that has been rumoured......

We are currently evaluating Open Office as an alternative for our 300 users and we are also looking at using Linux as a desktop alternative.

I have been to a few seminars where big companies are also looking at this strategy because they are fed up with the MS blues.

And yes, at home I use an Apple. Not because I buy all the Steve Jobs marketing spiel, because I don't. But it is a rock solid OS (yes it has crashed, but it comes back without waiting unlike Windows!) and it is much more intuitive (unlike Windows!). I switched about a year ago after getting bored / fed up with Windows.

I haven't looked back since and am loving it.

Please do tell. What are the things MS has got right in the last 5 years?

Was it stalling on releasing a new browser because they didn't think the Internet was important?

Was it then releasing a browser that did nothing new and innovate or better than it's main competitors?

Was it release a new Office product and force people to use a new save standard that isn't backward compatible?

What about release a new OS that was buggy, slow and not fit for use?

What about try and but a search giant as they can't do things themselves, even with all their resources!

Was it to fail in said search giant buy out?

No really, I'm intrigued!

Oh, wait, here's another one. Was it to get Steve Ballmer to replace Bill Gates? That must be it, that's so right!

I hate MS because they could be so much better. They basically make things that are OK, but that's it.
Broadband - are you mobile or fixed? 3:53pm on 15 Aug 2008 VampiricHoshi; I don't need to check my bandwidth usage, I know I am a heavy user, as I work in IT.

That means I also supply family and friends with advice and recommend the best broadband etc.

Most that I have set up use around 3-4Gb a month of bandwidth / downloading. Which includes email, itunes (not much mind), web browsing and a few downloads.

I would say that around 15 of the people I have helped, all but one I would class as 'average' users, the other one loves online games and video streaming, hence he uses a lot more.

The packages that are on offer are restrictive and can be deceptive, but the usage, in my opinion is not as high as you stated.

With new services and dare I say it 'web 2.0 and the cloud' I'm sure usage will go up as more and more software is supplied on net as a service.

The big thing that needs to change is the infrastructure to the home, BT's copper is just not good enough and we lag behind some other countries in this area, although to be fair, who'd have thought we'd be complaining about getting (upto - shh.) 8Mb download speed in the early 90's when this all started. (Rory?)

Also, like you suggest the Wi-MAX is a possibility in the future, but maybe only in large Cities......but who knows.

'Typical' here means 'average' and I can assure you that 'average' usage is no where near 30-40Gbs.........are you kidding me?

I do understand what you mean with the limits, especially the mobile broadband, but your figures are way off.

Why bring out a 'new' code of conduct and not have it apply to mobile broadband, which has been around for ages and is getting ever more popular.

No wonder this country is so behind, we drag our feet over everything......

That OS was way more advanced than MS Windows 1 / 2 / 3! MS didn't even have multi-tasking in Windows 95! Come on boy, keep up!

People forget what other options were available and that MS weren't that great back then or now. They tied up some great business deals so PC's were bundled with Windows and that's where we are today.

MS also picked on the little guys (stacker comes to mind!) and then used their technology to try and make Windows better.

If Amiga had been handled better (or other companies for that matter) we may have seen a different landscape altogether.

I don't hate MS, it's just frustrating that they still can't get things right!
