Hughes harshly treated by Man City 00:18am on 20 Dec 2009 As soon as we saw the takover everybody should have expected this. Whilst Mark Hughes has hardly done terribly does anybody here think he is a better manager than Ancelotti, Wenger, Ferguson or Benitez? Better than O'Neill or Redknapp? Not for me.
They spent 200m on quality players that any manager could use. Every single player Hughes bought was a household name before they came to City; it's how I would do it if I was playing football manager on my pc.
I think the owners look at Liverpool's poor start to the season and see that City have failed to capitalize and Spurs and Villa both look in better condition with more wily managment.
Can history be made in South Africa? 9:31pm on 30 Nov 2009 I'm sick to death of Brazil/ Barcelona et al. and their seeming god-given right to "The Beautiful game", especially in Brazil's case it is a myth propagated by the great teams of old. They were shocking in 2006. And I certainly was not in any awe of anything other than FIFA's incompetency in 2002. I see them as a team of cheaters and divers -like a whole team of Didier Drogbas. I'm not looking forwards to seeing Danny Alves rolling around on the turf for 5 mins a match.
I would absolutely love it to see somebody give them an absolute stuffing- preferably by a truly great team such as Spain. Or England -that would be truly humiliating for the international fawning media.

Drogba inflicts pain on Liverpool 4:54pm on 05 Oct 2009 Chelsea look to be the leaders of the pack right now, but come Jan-Feb during the Africa cup of Nations they will be hurting. Drogba, Essien, Kalou will all be gone. We can't sign any cover either. The squad is aging too and a couple of injuries at that time to any one of Terry, Carvalho, Lampard, Ballack, A Cole and especially Anelka would be crippling.
Torres, Drogba or Rooney - who's the best? 8:59pm on 02 Oct 2009 Torres scores so many goals he doesn't need to do anything else. Torres scores bags of goals and not tap ins. Drogba is the main striker for Chelsea, and Rooney is ok, but I am an English Chelsea fan and I wouldn't flinch before picking Torres ahead of both of them. Until Rooney ups his game he shouldn't be considered in the same category of player as Torres. Rooney has never had a season like Torres debut at Anfield. Rooney's scoring record for England and in the Champions League was woeful, nothing for 2 seasons. Heskeyesque if you will. Anybody who thinks Rooney is better than Torres is English or a Manu fan. Ridiculous.
Why England will win the World Cup! 8:45pm on 11 Sep 2009 Capello seems pretty good, I agree with that. But remember how good everybody thought Sven was? That because he came after Keegan. And Capello came after MacClaren which makes him look like a flippin' genius.
People thought Sven was amazing: I remember some friends of mine "borrowed" a life-size cardboard cutout of Sven from the local Sainsbury's and there were no shortage of lasses ready to get friendly with it. That was after the 3-0 romp against Denmark in 2002, before the dark times. Before Sven started going after anything with legs, before a lacklustre second half against Brazil, before we knew some lad called little Ronaldo and before David Seaman cut his hair. Before PENALTY SHOOTOUTS. El Tel won one -but evened things up with a loss to Germany on pens in a semi final.
As soon as Capello gets England anywhere on Penalties we can hail him as great: nobody else could do it. Before that time we are not going to win the world cup. We will loose on penalties in the QF. Again. Somebody will get sent off, our talisman, whoever our best player is (previously Beckham, Rooney next Walcott?) then we we get a fair goal disallowed or a straight penalty denied. Then Glen Johnson/Gareth Barry will miss a penalty and it will be over again for another 4 years.
Chicago calling or roll on Rio? 10:06pm on 03 Sep 2009 The biggest party in the world is the World Cup.
Arsenal's revival faces Man Utd test 5:24pm on 28 Aug 2009 Who in the current United team beyond the back 5 would get into this Arsenal side? Rooney? I'd be tempted to pick Arshavin and Fabregas over him. Carrick? Berbatov? You have to say the quality of the Arsenal midfield is incredible and the forwards aren't bad either.
Murray nears the summit 10:36pm on 18 Aug 2009 The last thing anybody wants is a #1 mens ranking with no Grand Slam titles. Andy's #1 priority should be and will be to win his self confessed favourite major and the one where he has produced his best form 4 weeks time in Queens. Congratulations to Andy on becoming world #2. In an era which he shares world tennis with 2 of the greatest players of all time it's quite a feat.
Joy and pain in Paris 7:40pm on 19 Jun 2009 Federer is great. But surely doubts remain if he is the greatest tennis player in his own era let alone all time? Does anybody doubt a healthy Nadal couldn't win 14 or more? He already has a Slam on every surface, beating the "Greatest Tennis Player of all time" in Grand Slam finals on all 3 surfaces!!
Don't be so quick to rush a coronation. I thin we can all agree though these are very exciting times for mens tennis. The Federer-Nadal rivelry is engrossing and I am sad that we'll have to wait until at least Flushing Meadows to see it again on the big stage.
