Why should coming from a poor family result in carry knives or any instrument of violenc? Thats just a cop out.
If you want to escape povery there are other routes, such as education which many seem to reject as uncool! It doesnt get 'respect' They want the rewards of without being prepared to put in the work.

I was brought up on a council estate where just about all my peers had 2 parents. If we failed at school at anything we were embarrassed and teased.

We all went to a comprehensive school and most of us went on to university.

The point is, it's not poverty that is responsible for the crime it's upbringing. Unfortunately there are many who are very prepared to have many kids (or conceive them) that they cant afford but much less prepared to care for them or educate them.

During the run up to the Moscow Olympics, we were all strongly proclaiming that medal tables should be dispensed with and even the flag raising at the awards ceremonies should be a thing of the past as well as laps of honour holding flags aloft.

It was said it encouraged unsavourary Nationalism. ( This wasn't just for the 1980 Olympics it was suggested it should have always been the case, and we were just reluctant participants in such activities.

Funny how suddenly we start putting such emphasis on the medal table. No one can accuse us of hypocrisy!
Wednesday's international football 8:44pm on 20 Aug 2008 Applauding the Georgians for playing the game??? Hold on a minute wasn't Yugoslavia barred from competing in the '92 Euros for a war on its territory?? didn't Georgia attack it's own people first? Shouldn't we be booing the Georgians instead??? Smacks of rampant hypocrisy and double standards!!
Dealing with demons after defeat 5:18pm on 20 Aug 2008 I was a junior Judoka who harboured hopes of an Olympic appearance in the 70s so I always follow the Judo closely.

This blog was such an eloquent and insightful contribution.

Without losers there can be no winners and it's how you deal with defeat and disappointment which is the the important matter.

Although not a medal winner it shows that you are an Olympian in it's truest sense!!
