How good was Great Britain's Silver Saturday? 5:05pm on 01 Sep 2009 MacKenzie apparently switched to rowing for Britain in 1962 because he refused to go all the way back to Australia for trials. As he'd won the Diamond Sculls at Henley for six years running, he sort of had a point.
Diving me crazy 7:22pm on 28 Aug 2009 What gets done about divers? Here's what should be done - they get a reputation as divers. This makes referees less likely to give them a penalty when they go to ground. Defenders then get to kick lumps out of them and get away with it.
All hail the Berlin comeback kids 11:00am on 19 Aug 2009 I do wish the media would stop hyping her up so much, because she's won golds twice by being the best in slow races. Faster Britons - Kathy Cook and Katherine Merry - could only claim bronze in their time. Ohuruogu's personal best would only have been good for bronze here. So please stop raising expectations that she's going to win gold again, because even if she does the best she possibly can, it'd still need others to fail. She deserved the golds she's won in the past, but that doesn't mean she'll get more, and heaping pressure on her will only make it harder.

Well, there's your problem. It was a quick check (and probably on Wikipedia). A quick bit of logic shows it's out of date. A *retired* sprinter isn't coached by anyone. A quick check by me following that shows that he was coached by Pettigrew in 2003, but Pettigrew wasn't found to be a drugs cheat until 2008.

Won't win it in a summer Olympic year without a gold medal.
Won't win it if there's a British F1 champion (Button this year, Button or Hamilton in future)
Won't win it if Murray wins a Grand Slam or gets close (Rusedski won it for losing in the US open final...)
Won't win it if England win anything at cricket or the Rugby Union world champs
Won't win it if the Tour de France isn't on terrestrial TV
Won't win it while people keep talking about drugs the moment cycling is mentioned (not fair, but not that surprising)

As for ITV - they did a very good job, but the BBC have the advantage that they don't have to break for adverts. One thing ITV didn't do that the BBC used to was mention the women's boat race.

Is Britain an Olympic superpower? 4:37pm on 27 Jan 2009 I thought it was an option for people from Northern Ireland to compete for either the Republic of Ireland or GB in the Olympics.

So NI boxers competing for the Republic probably suggests that the boxers are from the Catholic community in the region, while the NI Olympic finalists for GB (Houvenaghel in cycling, Campbell and Chambers in rowing) aren't.

boblinc - you must have a very low cost definition of "fortune" if you think Olympians are automatically wealthy. And I have seen a number of ex-Olympians giving back to their sports.
