Microsoft: 'No bounce' 3:58pm on 05 Oct 2009 This government has spent 10 years working on the premise that if shares and house prices are going up, then no one will actually notice anything else.
The current stock market bubble is totally unrelated to the wider economic situation, and is based on the belief, fostered by the government, that all can return to 'normal'. But what is 'normal'? Is it the conditions of 2003 - 2007 that the government would have us believe? I think not and I hope not, for if property prices and real inflation continued in that vein, we'd all be penniless billionaires in a few generations. It's totally unrealistic to assume, as the government has done, than it can engineer a scenario where inflation is held at a rigid level and there is a limitless supply of money for everyone to borrow what they want.

I'd be betting on a lot of burnt fingers by the end of the year.

BAE: Can't pay, would like to pay 11:29am on 01 Oct 2009 Um, somewhat surprised to have been moderated out #11, can moderators explain why my asking that if everyone is 'at it', unethical though it may be, why the SFO is leaping all over it and potentially damaging a big British manufacturing company.
I also asked where the money goes if BAE are fined a billion pounds? Do the SFO get to keep it in some way or does it go back into government funds and allow the govt to have cut the deficit somewhat?

Labour bets on bashing bankers 11:32am on 28 Sep 2009 From what I heard, bankers will probably earn no less, but will just get it in a different way. There's much anecdotal evidence of bankers having their basic pay doubled and their guaranteed bonuses slashed. The pay will be decided on the forecast for the next year and the performance from the last few years - sort of an 'advance bonus'.

The government is too ponderous to be able to stop this - it's like trying to nail jelly to the wall, but they have to make a good show of doing it, if only to appeal to their core voters who have been sickened by the money grabbing that's been going on since day 1.

I'd bet there is a lot of horse trading going on, Brown and his mob have been awfully cosy with the city for a good few years or so, and I reckon there may be some large skeletons in the closet yet to emerge.

Will this materially affect ITVs share price enough for them to be pushed into reconsidering?

What's in Cadbury's wrapper? 2:05pm on 24 Sep 2009 Sigh, and the most disheartening part of all this is that when the takeover does go through, as it almost inevitably will- is that the press will herald this as a return to the good times, or a sign that the economy is firing on all cylinders again. The banks involved will make millions for arranging a merger that will almost certainly involve a loss of revenue and Britisg jobs...
The market price of cutting airline emissions 10:26am on 22 Sep 2009 It's inconceivable that the next generations will travel anything like as much as we have done. The price of oil and pressures on the environment will take travelling by jet plane out of reach of millions of ordinary people.
The government waffles on about improving Britain's economy by building bigger airports, but if millions of Britons (and we are about the most travelled people on earth) do not go abroad and spend their money elsewhere, they are going to spend it in the UK which will have far more benefit
Should students pay our bills? 5:44pm on 21 Sep 2009 If everyone goes to university, who's going to clean the streets and serve fast food? It's not a great advertisement for higher education or financial affairs if our social sciences graduates all end up flipping burgers for a living.

Kids have to be left to find their own level to a certain extent. If everyone has a degree, their value is worthless.
