There might be a lot of "trimmings and bluster" on the LAST Show of Hands CD, "Witness" (which Colin gave a four star review to in Mojo at the time of its release). However, there isn't much in evidence on most of their previous albums, particularly from the period when Gerard O'Farrell produced them in the last last Millennium and early this Century. "Lie of the Land" and "Dark Fields are exquisite (and very acoustic) albums.

I like Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed a lot, but I'm not sure that the effort that has been expended to make the CD sound more "seriously folky" (particularly in its running order) won't have been counterproductive in terms of making it less approachable to those whose interest is "music", rather than just "folk music".
Jon Boden on Cambridge and Sidmouth Festivals 6:38pm on 20 Aug 2009 I would anticipate that the BBC's coverage of Folk Music would similarly benefit from the different approach that could be obtained by NOT focussing all of its festival programmes on Cambridge and Celtic Connections and (a very) occasional visit to Cropredy.
Jon Boden on Cambridge and Sidmouth Festivals 6:26pm on 20 Aug 2009 Sidmouth is a good example of why Festivals can benefit from a change of mananagement from time to time, because the people who took over from Mrs Casey proved that with a different approach, you could actually put on a very good and viable festival, which the old model had ceased to be.

Folk Clubs & Bankers 3:13pm on 02 Mar 2009 The recession of the early 1980's created a whole load of songs about the manufacturing industries and institutions that disappeared: John Tams' Vulcan & Lucifer, Elvis Costello's Shipbuilding and Ed Pickford Johnny Miner being just 3. It is going to take a dedicated song-smith to write anything half as good about Banking and Derivatives, but someone yet might.
2009 Folk Awards - and snow! 07:30am on 06 Feb 2009 EnglishFolkFan, I think you'll find the change to the running time of the radio show changed after Stuart Maconie and Mark Radcliffe failed to get to London on Monday. I suspect that was what then caused the re-timing of the Mike Harding Show on the Wednesday. You are completely right that Radio Times showed the usual hour and even the online schedule only showed one hour earlier this week. I'm not sure when it changed. I looked on Monday. Fortunately some kind soul actually posted on the Radio 2 Folk & Acoustic Message board that the timing had changed, so I did actually catch all of it.

The stupidity of filling the BBC 4 schedule this week (and last) with hours of repeats of folk concerts from 30-50 years ago (some in black and white) while only putting the Folk Awards footage on the website is just pathetic. The filming and the editing are already done, SHOWING the programme is not going to increase costs that much. This on the channel that shows hour upon hour of interminable Proms every summer!
Steve Knightley Blog - Part 1 12:01pm on 29 Jan 2009 What I want to know is why the BBC has gone to a great deal of trouble and expense to film great chunks of Celtic Connections and is then only showing it on BBC One SCOTLAND and BBC Two SCOTLAND. The festival is probably just as important as Cambridge and is of interest throughout these isles. Now, it so happens I personally have Sky and can cheat and watch the BBC's Scottish variants that way, but that isn't the case for people on Freeview.
For all of you who love the banjo... 12:31pm on 13 Jan 2009 The Dark One and The Fair One cheat and play banjo tunes on the Cuatro, so as not to scare the easily disturbed in their audience, as does Seth Lakeman with his Tenor Guitar.
