Fixing the Have Your Say fault 12:22pm on 05 May 2009 Why can't the BBC's software programmers fix this and other faults? The old Radio player was replaced by iPlayer which is an unmitigated disaster and is still inferior after trying to fix it for a year or more. If the Air Traffic Control centre for SE England broke down it would be fixed double quick. If they can do it why not the BBC? Your reputatuion is in tatters.
Two go mad in Silicon Valley... 4:42pm on 30 Oct 2008 Why do I have to watch Newsnight to see a scientific programme that should be on prime time TV? I refer to Two go mad in Silicon Valley. Now we know that computer servers are big consumers of power the next step is to draw up a comprehensive list of major industries in descending order of power consumed. I suspect that the entire global radio and tv transmission and reception resources, including military, aviation, navigation, radar and anything else you can think of might be high on the list, perhaps with all the resources involved in generating the transmitted signal included. It was ironic to see pictures of all those servers with their cooling fans adding yet more power. In the beginning it was the valve with its power hungry heater, then the semiconductor, the next stage must be a device that consumes no electricity, optical for example. Thanks for an excellent programme.

German guarantee lost in translation 9:25pm on 05 Oct 2008 If all our banks go down the tubes perhaps we will have to finance our house purchases in accordance with shira law.
Full deposit protection is nigh 7:30pm on 05 Oct 2008 The banks are falling on a daily basis in Europe and the USA; the pack of cards is collapsing before our eyes. At the present rate it won't be long before they are all gone so a return to the 1930s now seems inevitable.
B&B: end of an era 4:42pm on 28 Sep 2008 Of course demutualisation was a failure as has been apparent ever since Northern Rock bit the dust. The old building societies were both predator and speculator proof. The Government needs to move quickly to repeal the 1986 'Building Societies Act' which made demutualisation possible. Also, some way has to be found for those societies taken over by the big four such as Woolwich and Cheltenham and Gloucester to be returned to mutual status at no cost to mortgage holders. Going beyond building societies, there is a good case for allowing Credit Unions to provide mortgages for first time buyers as this will be a further source of speculation proof housing finance, which has all but dried up.

So I just filled in Atlee and Heath a the top and Blair next to last followed by Lady T. As for the middle rankers I used a pin to pick out the names.
iPlayer Radio: Buffering & Programme Availability Update 6:20pm on 07 Sep 2008 The new iPlayer is basically flawed by trying to be all things to all people. For those with a dial-up modem connection the old Radio Player was, and still is, the best solution. For broadband users there is a totally new set of issues to be resolved. So let's have two versions side by side. A couple of problems with the new listen again: firstly, there is no 'go back to where you were when you stopped' feature . This is a big problem if the internet connection is lost as when you re-connect you don't know where you were. Second when experiencing sudden loss of sound (buffering ?) with the old Radio Player it always picked up where it stopped so nothing was lost - not even a syllable, but with the new iPlayer several seconds or minutes of audio are lost whenever a silent period occurs. I repeat what others have remarked all the pictorial content is completely inappropriate for a 56kb/s dial up modem connection as it takes minutes to load and is no value whatsoever.
