Anonymous on the internet 3:10pm on 25 Aug 2009 Making myself less anonymous in my commenting profile here is hard.. as you don't let me.

But, as a computer geek, I know there are ways to interact with the internet in such a way as to be virtually untraceable. (Tor, for example.)

Being anonymous, at times, allows you to tell the truth without repercussions, when telling the truth would normally get you attacked by an online community. I have used an anonymous comment for exactly this purpose in the past. My words were no less relevant, but my identity and reputation remained unspoilt.

Anonymity can be very important, especially in our society, where our government is slowly, carefully inching us towards being a repressive state. wikileaks, for example, would suffer without anonimity, because of the way that whistleblowers are treated, even for doing the right thing.
Google Chrome - one day on... 5:06pm on 09 Jul 2009 Heh: to that manufacturer exec, 3G dongles on linux are far, far, far easier to get working than Windows. In ubuntu, I plug my 3G dongle in, and I get a popup asking me who my supplier is.

I have had far, far more trouble getting stuff to work in Windows (sound card, graphics card etc) than I've ever had with ubuntu.

Mainly, normally, it just works. Simply just works! I really have never found that with windows, there is always some faffing around with drivers and programs and installations :(
Chrome - living in a Google world? 4:08pm on 08 Jul 2009 Whilst I am a Linux techy, so biased, I have heard plenty of stories about Ubuntu being usable enough as a competitor to windows and mac. (This comment comes thanks to a computer running Ubuntu. And it really wasn't hard to setup)

The main problem we have, is people just not willing to put their toes in the water. The largest software companies won't release games for linux without a sufficient market share, but we are finding a catch-22 over that one. Mainly, the way we've found around it, is to replace them. With open-source, free versions. (GIMP / photoshop, etc)

Trust me, it is not hard to live in a linux world, and you really *don't* have to be determined and sophisticated in computer usage.
