The Bride Wars Challenge 5:53pm on 01 Sep 2009 I would hate to see you go, but this may be my only chance of hearing your verdict on GI Joe. Seems you were on holidays that week and "Mark Lite" (no offense to the replacement himself but he's no you) gave it a not altogether terrible review.

Personally, it was one of my top movies of the year. It was sheer entertainment, and if nothing else, at least the cast looked like they were having a blast on set! Plus, as a Joe fan since childhood, I loved all the gags and in-jokes.

Finally, Terminator Salvation, as mentioned by several above must be on your list! No idea what Bride Wars was like, but Salvation is a damn sight worse than Transformers 2, in my opinion.

All too often we only get to hear the stories of outright bans, hack-job cuts and edits and just negative censorship in general. It's great to learn of the pains some people with the power to just stop a film release in its tracks will go to in order to ensure that is not the final outcome.
Moon Movies 11:28pm on 17 Jul 2009 You say that sci-fi movies are very rarely about the thing that they seem to be about. I'd like to amend that to "GOOD sci-fi movies are very rarely about the thing that they seem to be about." Alien is just a haunted house (in space), Sunshine is a psychological thriller (in space), Firefly, more than it's movie Serenity, is a western (in space). And, not in space, but Bladerunner is an essay on what it means to be human set in the future. On the other end of the spectrum are Battlefield Earth and Armageddon.

In my opinion, the best sci-fi stories are ones that could be told without the genre of science-fiction appearing at all, using a present day earth location, but they just happen to be set in space, for any number of reasons, but not as the focus or reason of the story. Good sci-fi stories know this, bad sci-fi stories might also be aware of the fact, but choose to ignore it in favor of huge explosions, aliens, lasers, spaceships, high technology and larger-than-life heroes.

Something tells me Moon would be just as comfortable set in Antarctica, or the bottom of the ocean... except, then, the title just wouldn't make much sense!
Blog reply replies: A matter of opinions 4:54pm on 07 Jul 2009 I just had to sign up after seeing this! Awesome post. I've been watching for a few months now, ever since a friend pointed the blog out to me. Love the style, but that's not the point:
I gotta admit, I was a huge fan of both Transformers. Yes, they are rubbish, but I was able to switch off my brain and just watch the flash effects. Then again, I enjoyed "The Island" under the same metal abilities. I'm just wondering if you intend on subjecting yourself to GI Joe: Rise of Cobra? Considering it (allegedly) got the worst test scores in the history of American cinema test screening, something tells me it'll be on your list of "Worse movies than Bride Wars"!!
Cannot wait for Moon, though. Heard about it a few months back. Been following what little I've been able to find since.
