Europe's identity crisis 2:59pm on 25 Nov 2009 The two biggest factors that make integration harder are being a different colour from the majority and having a different religion from the majority. Obviously the first can't be changed and the second is unlikely to be changed. As someone of European origin and Christian background, if I moved to France or Germany, became fluent in the language and developed a local accent, then after a few decades I would be fully integrated and my children would be accepted as 'fully' French or German and nobody would know that we were immigrants.

If I and my children were of African origin, or prayed in a mosque or temple, then I'm sure that we'd be treated differently, especially in villages where people of non-European origin are rare. Then in the next generation my children would be less likely to marry indigenous French or German people, and would continue to be less integrated due to race or religion. It wouldn't matter whether I'd signed a contract or not - I would be treated differently to how I'd be treated if I was of European origin.

Maybe eventually people of different physical appearance will be accepted as being stereotypically English, French etc. (in the same way as potatoes!) but it may take a century or two...

The only 2 players from Liverpool's best 11 that I'd be happy to see join Owen at Old Trafford are Gerrard and Torres (with Owen moving back to Anfield). As for the rest of them - they can stay working wonders at Anfield.
Europe's identity crisis 07:44am on 25 Nov 2009 Gavin, you say that in America the vast majority of arrivals wanted to become "American" and to embrace their new country with all its customs and values. But America has a grave lack of integration of it's different communities - many residential neighbourhoods are highly racially segregated and not a good example of racial integration at all. According to Wikipedia, 'although people of different races may work together, they are still very unlikely to live in integrated neighbourhoods'.
Man City will regret lack of ambition 07:49am on 23 Nov 2009 Cyborgia - you say that a side conceding less than 30 goals in a season should be in the top 4. City have conceded 16 goals in 12 matches, so at this rate they'll concede 51 goals in the season - leaving them well below the top 4!

I agree with MartinJSUK - when your defence is so frail you should attack.
Why cars are greener than buses (maybe) 1:07pm on 20 Nov 2009 Letzbe_Avenue - 111 - You disagree that the more we improve our roads, and develop sites with road transport in mind, the more we encourage people to increase their CO2.

I'm not complaining about having good roads - I use them after all - but the better they are the more I'm likely to use them.

Why cars are greener than buses (maybe) 12:21pm on 20 Nov 2009 I used to go to work on the train 1 or 2 days out of 4, until the office moved from the town centre to a new out-of-town development. I tried it once (with added extra cost and time of a bus journey) but have always travelled by car since then.

However, the only thing that makes it practical for me to work 35 miles from home (as a contractor, not a permanent employee, so it's not worth trying to move house) is the motorway. Without it I would have to drive miles through the city or suburbs which would take too long and I wouldn't have contemplated taking the contract.

The more we improve our roads, and develop sites with road transport in mind, the more we encourage people to increase their CO2 output.

Let me tell you where I'm coming from. I played football off and on in local leagues for works teams etc. until I was 48. Certainly as an adult I never fouled anyone deliberately, never deliberately handled the ball or tried to con the ref; so I have a strong sense of fair play.

Since I was 7 I've watched professional football, and support Man Utd and England. Let's be honest, on many occasions I've seen seen my players cheating, and I don't like it, but I still keep watching. I've seen Ronaldo con the ref (and sometimes be slated for it), and I've seen opposition players deliberately foul Ronaldo (and not be slated for it). Many times I've chanted 'Cheat' at opposition players when they've gained an advantage by cheating, but I've never howled 'Cheat' at one of my own team's players. Robbo, have you abused Boro players when you've seen them cheating? I suspect not.

Imagine what it would be like if Capello said that any England player caught cheating (shirt-pulling, trying to con the ref, deliberately fouling) would be sent home from South Africa immediately. If he demanded that if we were given a decision in error the player involved said 'No ref - it's not a penalty, free kick, etc...'. If he demanded that when a player accidentally fouled someone and the ref didn't blow up the player must say 'Sorry ref, I fouled him'. That would be great in the spirit of fair play, but it would reduce our chances of winning. Would you support that?

Cheating at the top level isn't going to be stamped out unless the FIFA top brass develop spines, and that's about as likely as Santa coming down my blocked-up chimney on Christmas Eve. If they wanted to try they'd need to stamp out cheating by defenders (which doesn't get much attention) as well as cheating by attackers.

Roll on fair play in football...
That was horrid, Henry 2:08pm on 19 Nov 2009 Robbie Keane didn't mind scoring the penalty which shouldn't have been given against Georgia. How many Irish players can honestly say that they have never cheated and got away with it (eg. pulling someone's shirt, claiming a corner when they knew it should be a goal kick)? It's a case of the pot calling the kettle black! Virtually all professional players try to cheat - and sometimes they get away with it...
