Toby Foster meets Mayor Peter Davies 11:20am on 05 Jul 2009 It would seem to me that the point of this interview was not about whether the new mayor would like to do these things, but that he had promised repeatedly to do things that were illegal, like reduce the number of councilors.

The law (easily checkable) says that this type of council must have a number of councilors per ward "divisible by three". Therefore, by law, any reduction of councilors achieved by "appealing to their better natures" would only trigger by-elections to fill the vacancies - at great cost to the town.

The point of the interview was surely that the man had promised the electorate many things which a superficial knowledge of the mayor's legal powers would have told him he couldn't do. You have to ask yourself, as a politician of many years experience, did he not know, of was he less than honest with the voters?

In either case, I suspect his public will soon be very angry with him.
