Labour waits in Glasgow North East 1:30pm on 09 Jul 2009 The URL was a link to a note by the Parliament and Constitution Centre of the House of Commons. An alternative way of bringing up the note is by using the following search terms in Google: "Recess Elections Act 1975" "Oonagh Gay"

Perhaps the rules have changed, but when Robin Cook died the writ was moved on 8 September 2005, i.e. when the HoC was in recess. There are other examples, too.

Can't any party move the writ? I am sure the Liberals did this at least once in the 1980s.
A new baby of the House? 11:41am on 02 Jul 2009 Further back than that, Irlpol. In 1987 Alasdair Milne (the then Director-General) was told to "leave immediately" by the recently appointed Chairman of the Board of BBC Governors - a man who had close connections with the Conservative Party. Under Milne's direction the BBC had bravely transmitted a number of controversial programmes which did not find favour with the establishment.
A new baby of the House? 4:11pm on 01 Jul 2009 Yes, it is curious why Craig Murray was omitted from Michael Crick's report. Mr Murray writes that he already has eight local volunteers working on his campaign.
