Schumacher return looking increasingly likely 8:38pm on 12 Dec 2009 I thought his wife was against his returning to the sport. What did he do to convince her that it was vital to his mental health that he restart his hobby of dangerously driving around in circles in far flung locations? Did he tell her it would help with their kids' (now 10 and 12) geography lessons or something? Poor Corinna!

Still, this is the guy who donated 10 million dollars to the 2004 Tsunami victims... and donated tens of millions more to worthy causes. Being the first billion dollar athlete ever, let's hope he continues to show more class than the second billion dollar athlete ever.

Safin says goodbye 09:41am on 12 Nov 2009 Hey, all power to Safin on being himself. Posterity may remember him as an "unfulfilled talent" or some such rot, but the thing about Posterity is - it's irrelevant to the person concerned. Safin had a good time, and has earned enough to ensure that the rest of his life is comfortable. That's all that matters.

The press puppies can yap all they want, but Safin's a cat - he don't give a shit.

PS: Why were the media so gaga about Cantona's trawler quote? Were they offended that they were described as merely seagulls instead of, say, vultures?
Football's forgotten superstar 09:26am on 12 Nov 2009 I'm not sure if Freddy could handle the English game - by his own admission, he likes the Portuguese game because it's less physical.

If he does want to move to England, he ought to try a Championship side - the standard is still higher than MLS and it's a good training ground. But he should only do that if he really wants to learn how to deal with the unsavoury physical aspect of the game.

The problem is buying out his Benfica contract - that makes him unattractive for other teams to buy. Perhaps if every one of his Twitter fans paid $10, he could buy out his own contract.

As it is, he remains (along with Shevchenko and many others) a poster child for players who were satisfied with the owner of a football club wanting them and not checking that the coach wanted them too.

I do hope the next one will have even more numbers though, particularly at what's happening at the Championship level and below. The Premiership is irrelevant to this discussion, since it's really an International League. The top English League in England is the Championship.

Points like these were the meat of the article. I liked them. More explanation of the coaching qualifications would be nice - how many levels of coaching are there between this UEFA B thing and getting hired by a footie club?

I would also have liked to hear more from senior players and junior coaching staff - both black and white - at the Conference level. Changes happen from the grassroots up.

Btw, if you get criticized for mentioning words like 'black' and 'white', don't worry about it. Yes, we would like to live in a post-racial world where such terms are merely used as descriptions, but let's face it, we don't. And yes, we do realize that 'black' and 'white' are really simplifications (hell, I'm neither black nor white, I would know) that we're accepting for the sake of an argument shorter than a doctoral thesis.

I like the Rooney rule. But you do realize that many football fans despise American Rugby-With-Protection and that suggesting ideas from there would be to give said ideas the kiss of death? It's not fair, of course, but we are a prejudiced lot. Speaking of American sports, doesn't the NBA have a surprisingly small number of black coaches & owners as well?

Anfield's day of destiny 10:48am on 24 Oct 2009 As a Liverpool fan for two decades and counting, I hope Man U win so that we get a new coach (I have never liked Rafa's rotation policy and was mystified by his failure to get the best out of Keane). In an ideal world we would also get new owners or, better, a time machine to go back and persuade Hicks to buy United instead.

Del Potro sets seal on memorable US Open 03:12am on 16 Sep 2009 I am surprised that only one poster here so far complained about the American emcee's dismissing (at first) Del Potro's pleas to speak Spanish. Over at the New York Times tennis blog (Straight Sets) there were hundreds of complaints at how CBS (the American TV station that the US Tennis Association put in charge of the presentation) disgracefully handled Del Potro's request.

And yes, it was lovely to watch a gruntless ladies tennis match, in a Slam Final no less.
Chelsea will suffer if transfer ban stands 11:29pm on 03 Sep 2009 Are you biased towards big clubs or something? The only worms here are the rapacious practices of the big clubs in poaching young players from little clubs. FIFA are catching worms, not freeing them. I hope they catch a lot more. Please try to see both sides of the story.
