China goes sweet and sour on Australia 02:45am on 20 Aug 2009 Understandably Australia's relationship with Britain and often America receive much comment in replies to Nick's blog and they are often fun and often they say more about the commentator than the subject. However it is increasingly clear that Australia's most important international relationship is with China. The 'British Century' ended 109 years ago, the 'American Century' ended 9 years ago. We are now in the 'Chinese century' and Australia is in the fore-front of the world's relationship with China. For all the flack Britain and America received for their time of world dominance does anyone outside China relish the prospect of Chinese world dominance with greater enthusiasm? Australia needs to take a guenuinely strategic long tern view of it's relationship with China, as was said earlier Chins is not the only market for resources. Does anyone else see a parallel with Argentina which effectively became an economic colony of Britain in the late 19th and early 20th century? I guenuinly shudder at the thought of Australia throwing away it's future liberty for short term political expediency.
Meaasuring the threat 03:21am on 07 Aug 2009 On many levels security levels in Australia are considerably lower than in comparable societies in Europe and North America. Plenty of public institutions and educational establishments are unfenced and I have lost count of the number of times I have walked into businesses for work purposes and wandered around freely and unchallenged before finding someone to help with my enquiry. Even from a basic crime reduction point of view Australia is (to these world weary European eyes) a noticibly open and trusting place. This relaxed life and greater personal liberty is part of it's attraction for me but then I am not a thief, vandal or terrorist. There is no magic wall around Australia as we were reminded this week. It seems to me that Australia will remain different to Europe and N. America until there is a significant attack on Australian soil. Then sadly it will 'catch up' with the rest of the world.
Waking up to Ashes lag 6:10pm on 13 Jul 2009 Ricky does seem to be whinging a lot in recenly. Ponting is a English surname (believed of Norman origin). Has anybody checked his family history............ is he one of us?
Should Poms be denied the vote? 00:52am on 01 Jul 2009 Could I suggest a (dare I say it good old British) compromise? That the voting arangement represents a historical situation which now seems out-dated but these people are shrinking in number each year and it all seems a bit angry what is being suggested and says more about those advokating it than anyone else. Why not just let the situation exist and not upset these blameless people who have contributed to Australia for many years.
By the way where are all these angry people who contribute to these blogs? As a foreigner in Australia I meet nothing but pleasant people who care very little about these non-issues.
The Pom influence 9:38pm on 26 Jun 2009 As a Brit currently working & living in Australia it is unquetionably true that life in here is at once easily identifyable and accessable and there are many recognisable British influences and I have never felt that I am living in a 'foreign land'.I would suggest though that those are as a result of Australia's history and are deminishing. I suggest that an American living here would find just as many echos from home as I do. As Nick acknowledges Australia is and has been the recipient of many cultural infuences but underplays the fact that it has turned them into what it wants to be which is ...... Australia. So I say "Good on ya" I'm here because I like it. Australia carry on being what ever it is you are.
