The AM Glass Box 10:12am on 21 Sep 2009 Here's a question:- does Cathy Clugston (hope my spelling is right!) have the clearest pronounciation on the BBC? I often hear her reading the news (e.g. today) and more quirky stuff (e.g. the satellite navigation instructions for whales a few days ago). Outstanding. The voice is so well modulated and she even sounds her "t"s - not very common these days for BBC or other announcers/reporters. seems to be a fashion, especially with Government ministers/spokespeople, to drop the letter "t" of course, when we accept using the noun 'chair' for someone who chairs a committee, should I be surprised? Wonder if this abuse of language occurs in say, French or German...

When I was a child we had a family living nearby, who were unable to hear propoerly from birth, leading to great problems in their day to day play and communication with us other youngsters. We became great friends despite this, though, and I was able to support them a bit by learning as much manual signing as I could. Interestingly, they always had trouble understanding, if I asked "...what for?" No doubt thanks to my poor pronounciation as a kid, they thought I was asking "Where's father?" so this did make for complications!
Glad to see BBC offering such solid support to Meera. Congratulations on progressing so well from a different starting point! Keep up the good work.

The AM Glass Box 7:57pm on 21 Jul 2009 Wondering if I've missed BBC reporting what seems to have been an important result in Afghanistan this week, reported by the Australian Defence Force's "task force" or special forces working with Afghan national troops - the killing of Mullah Amanullah Akhund a senior Taliban insurgent commander and a known improvised explosive device facilitator? Significant story by the sounds of it, but I've heard/seen nothing so far on UK news coverage....
The AM Glass Box 8:25pm on 09 Jul 2009 I hear that in Scotland, local authorities are currently "reviewing" their employees' pay scales and grades - downwards for most of the men and women at the service end, but upwards for more senior staff. The capital city, Edinburgh - yes, that's the one in the much delayed and costly 'bring back the trams' scheme - is the latest to issue new scales for "discussion." Severe reaction is expected from among others, binmen/women and manual workers some of whom will face pay cuts. It would be interesting to hear Eddie interviewing the leading lights, including the UNISON trade union which represents many of the staff.
what's that? 9:30pm on 07 Jul 2009 Living in the sticks, we are lucky to see most wild birds though no longer larks and, by feeding, have managed to encourage lots of smaller ones to breed and nest in this area. Unfortunately, we also have a (rescued from the city) cat, which makes short work of anything wild it gets, hares; rabbits; WEASELS (honestly); voles; fieldmice and once even a passing bat! Anyone know if we can buy 'wild credits,' like carbon credits? Living in the country is great especially the huge expanses of sky, unaffected at night by artificial lighting so that you can actually see the space station, though not yet the dropped toolbag! Just be ready to dispatch the odd half killed, stinking weasel - or was it a stoat - I'm not sure.
The AM Glass Box 9:19pm on 07 Jul 2009 Meant to add that an even more disturbing development in some cases was police insisting that the photographer show them the photos being deleted on the digital card before their very eyes. I can't believe this is legal, but apparently it does happen. Surely the public have to told officially of what is legal (or not) given the scale of so-called "citizen journalist" photos and clips being invited on TV newscasts. No one I've approached (one foreign embassy in particular) over a recent case could give me chapter and verse, but they did suggest there might have been " special rules " for specially important events.
Glass Box for Tuesday PM 8:48pm on 07 Jul 2009 19-24 Those situations reminded me of the (new, to me at least) rules against taking photos of policemen/women on the public street. It seems full time photographers, according to the National Union of Journalists' own trade mag, are now regularly being prohibited from taking shots of even poice cordons - and in some cases being photographed themselves... by police. (The current issue has a photo showing this happening). It would be nice to hear Eddie grilling some responsible senior officer on the new sytem; why was it brought in, is it as described, or are the journos exaggerating? Does the same rule apply to BBC/ITN camera operators? It's a sad day when one can't take inoffensive shots on the street, or could they be worried about being caught dealing in a less than fair manner with the public? I'm no anti poice activist, by the way, but genuinely interested if the law has changed.
The AM Glass Box 8:37pm on 07 Jul 2009 A general query, for anyone 'in the know' Does it generally take a week or so for comments to appear? I often find very interesting posts I'd like to reply to, but they are already pretty old by the time I read them. Maybe this is the time it takes for all material to be checked/moderated? Be glad to know the anwer to this please.
