The fear of minarets 3:51pm on 30 Nov 2009 Why should any religion have a dominance over another? Surely the indication of a civilised society is religious tolerance.
Why is it that a religion comes as a package with your parentage and the country you were born in?
If religions are universal then surely they can be practiced around the world.
No country has a manopoly on religious beliefs.
Or perhaps this is the Christian religion once again struggling to hang on to power?

So we're in the biggest global recession known to man.
There's something like 2.5 million people un-employed.
The economy is on its knees.
Rubbish is being left in the streets.
There are marches once again on the streets of Britain.
People can't afford to heat their house or pay for their electricity.

And....they talk about somebody's mansion that may or may not get taxed!
Dubai: Wholly avoidable crisis 12:04pm on 30 Nov 2009 We had no doubt that the arab countries would bail of Dubai. There was little chance of them failing since they were part of the 'family'. None of them would see there fellow colleagues (and relatives) be reduced to their last private jet and luxury yacht.
What is questionable, though, is about the risk taken in such ventures.
Is it possible that the glitz, glamour, and celebrity status of this dream in Dubai was too tempting for our jaded investors in the City of London. Perhaps the appeal of mixing with the jet set, super models and the 'David Beckhams' of this world was enough for them to forget commonsense and buy into the dream.
Buying into the dream, by the way, with other people's money!

Thanks for your comforting words. So the U.K. institutions are only exposed to a few billions in Dubai. A mere drop in the ocean.

Please don't tell me that a major financial institution in the U.K. has investments in Dubai.
If so..I may as well book an appointment with the euthanasia clinic in Switzerland....because I've just lost the will to live!

So more exposure to risky debts by the grandees in the City of London.
I have no doubt that the oil-rich arab countries will bail Dubai out, but at what cost? Where is the money coming from?
Once again we see the world's stock markets drop as another wave of bad news hits the headlines.
Will this be another call to the now over-stretched pockets of the tax-payer?
Will, once again, the financial experts come crawling back, apologising for their failure?
Who knows, Stephanie.
I think that there is still more to come!

Just when you thought that international financiers could not plunge the depths of failure any further.......this happens.
What other little gems are in the pipeline that we have yet to hear about?
Is Cumbria a victim of climate change? 4:01pm on 24 Nov 2009 I'm always interested when people talk about flooding and flood defenses.
Flood defenses may protect the immediately area, but they do nothing to stop flooding.
I am reminded about a documentary a few years ago where they studied a particular river and tried to determine the best position for flood defences.
In the end they gave up.
Their conclusion was that if you prevent flooding in one area, all that happens is that an area further down the river floods. In effect the created floods are often worse than the natural floods because the new areas are not adapted to dealing with the extra water. The water has to go somewhere. Rivers have developed over time, as have flood plains which act as the release valves for many ancient rivers. Change something which has occurred naturally and all you do is cause problems in other areas.
The simple answer is accept that rivers have developed naturally and created their own checks and balances.
There is nothing you can do about it!
Nature will have its way.
Britain lands key EU foreign policy post 11:59am on 20 Nov 2009 I was in conversation with my (Belgian) post-man this morning.
He was excited that a Belgian minister would now be working with someone from the U.K.
"Why", he asked "Does the U.K. hate Europe so much?"
"Perhaps now we can all work together"
I had no answer.
At least he was excited by the prospect.
Personally....I think it is a marriage made from hell!
But don't tell the Belgians that....
Three-way on the MPC 10:15am on 19 Nov 2009 I watched your broadcast with Mervyn King.....
OK....didn't mean a thing to me...but....
When it comes to having confidence in one person in the U.K. (whether you understand his arguments or not) it is Mervyn King.
Personally I would rather see him and his colleagues at the Bank of England in charge of the U.K. economy, than all the faceless Civil Servants and government 'appointees' in Downing Street, Whitehall and the Treasury!
At least he gives the impression of knowing what he is talking about.
