Bride Wars Revisited 08:56am on 14 Nov 2009 Enough people, enough.

Yesterdays reviews were a great example of why good and bad is purely a personal thing - not matter what anyone who considers themselves intellegensia (sic) may think.

Why? Here's why, feel free to shoot it down . . .

1)The whole 2012 review was basically Roland Emmerich films since ID4 stink, and the whole review seemed informed by that view point. This is something we ALL do - it's why we develop our own tastes. There are things we like, things we don't. It's why I won't see the Hobbit films when they come out, as I believe the LOTR trilogy is whackingly over-rated (brickbats on a postcard please . . . ) but clearly, most of you will. It's why I'm sick of vampire films, as the original idea of them - ie some scares! - is now relegated to second place to like, y'know, the angst, forbidden love etc etc.

It's wierd because I won't go to see 2012. Why? Because, as Mark said, you KNOW what'll happen - pretty much blow for blow. But if that floats your boat, then go for it. It's what we all do. Who on this blog who is a serious film fan, who loves their Von Trier, PT Anderson, Jackson, Del Torro etc will think 'Ohh, what shall I see, Pan's Labyrinth or Bride Wars? I fancy rom-com farce tonight . . . '

(I know they weren't out at the same time!)

What's the point in going to see something you know you're not going to like? In Marks's case, it's his job - fair point. But what about the rest of us?

2) The Harry Brown review could not get past the subtext. I've not seen the film yet, probably have to wait for the DVD. But . . . if the subtext/politics of a film offend your personal politics, then clearly you're not going to like it, are you? But should you not review it on it's merits / faults, or does the subtext/politics be all? I remember Mark mentioning Driller Killer, and the idelogical backdrop for that. Sorry, it sucks. It is a terrible film (in my opinion). But is that because I don't buy into the subtext? Maybe. But I had no back knowledge of it past the title, and I just thought it utterly terrible - no more, no less.

Very rare is the person, irrespective of age, who genuinely has no preconceptions of any film they are going to see - be it informed by a knowledge of previous work, the posters, trailers, the cast etc etc. We're all as bad as each other. Indeed, isn't it because of our preconceptions we're going to see that particular thing? And sometimes, we can be surprised, and those views might be altered by a good or bad film.

For Button, most race wins & points = champion. 'Nuff said.

Have to say, though, I think that this year will only be able to be properly assessed after next season - this one has been a bit of an oddity.

Have to say though, Button IS the luckiest champion ever. Not his own - you make your own luck to a point, and he's made plenty this year - but everyone else's bad luck. So much in one year - heck, after two corners yesterday, 4 cars in front of him fell off & Barrichelo (sic) gets a puncture, finally killing his chances . . .

Bring on next year! And please, let's have Ari in!

From Back to the Future to the Piano... You hum it and I'll play it 12:59pm on 08 Oct 2009 Quite frankly, I couldn't care less about the intricacies of Johnny B Goode in BTTF - I just loved the whole film, performance and all, and just went with whatever was put in front of me. That film is that good.

As ever, it depends on how bothered you want to be. If the film cannot engage you sufficiently to go with it, and run with it's logic, the it follows you'll be looking for flaws, have I left the oven on, etc etc

The Greatest Megabudget Movie Ever Made 11:10pm on 01 Oct 2009 On old ground here . . .

Lord Of The Rings . . . starts great & tails off. And yeah, $300 mil is still a lot of money!!

Batman Begins is (I think) about as good as a modern blockbuster gets (TDK is good, but but not that good)

Spider Man 1&2 are great (no. 3, not so)

Last Action Hero is let down by the kid (not likeable enough), but that's it - a cult classic

But as ever, it's in the eye of the beholder -you'll like whatever works for you.
Button deserves credit for rearguard fight 00:28am on 28 Sep 2009 Ripenho, fair point. By luck, I meant that the safety car closed the grid up massively, and meant he could pit with anyone else, negating the time issue.

It's just an example of the little things that can add up and up.

By the way, here's a thought - to those who think that Button is 'undeserving'. 2007 - did Kimi 'deserve' to win? First half of the season, fairly poor. Second half, came to life. But still had a lot of luck to get the win. It was almost like Button's season in reverse!

'Derserved' is a very tricky thing to pin down. As I stated earlier, JB made the absolute best of the advantage he had, when he had it, which is all any driver can do.

It is simply impossible to overlook the fact that, looking at the next 8 races as a whole, the cards have fallen for Jenson massively. Nothing to do with his performance - he's done the best he can. But luck has certainly helped out (ie the safety car today? Right place, right time . . . )

Only time will tell how lucky / great / whatever Jenson is. Assuming he wins this season (given how the fickle finger of fortune is working, he must do - he'd be UNlucky to lose it now!!!) let's see how he does in next seasons car. It might be great. It might be hopeless. It may be intermittently competitive. But it would be fairer then to judge him AFTER the title win. As we've seen this season, previously uber-competitive teams can fall off perches very quickly, so nothing should be taken for granted.
Button deserves credit for rearguard fight 8:47pm on 27 Sep 2009 There's always the argument about the harder you work, the luckier you get . . . it's a tricky one. By the first seven races, undeniably Button is a totally deserving champion. He drove superbly, made the most of the car, while just about everyone else was playing catch-up.

However, in the next eight races, the form has largely vanished, whilst the luck has remained. I can think of NO championship ever, where the championship leader has not won for eight races, been on the podium only once in that time, and yet has not seen his lead dip below 14 points. Not even Schumacher ever, EVER had that kind of luck.

This season I think will go down as a freak one. So much hassle, intrigue, dubiousness, the occasional exciting race . . . hopefully, next year will settle down, and get some balance back to common sense in the rules (No in season testing? Pathetic).

Maybe it's a karma thing: this is Jensons payback for the last few years at Honda?

PS: Let's hope Ari Vatenen gets in, and it's time for Bernie to go. REALLY time. Any suggestions for a replacement? I'd say Niki Lauda, personally, but hey . . .
