Europe's identity crisis 6:46pm on 24 Nov 2009 I have never been asked if I wanted immigration in my country. This offends me greatly. As a Briton I resent the influx of immigrants. Let them work hard as my ancestors did to improve their own land, and not invade mine to reap the benefits of generations of hard work.
Just after WW2 when most economies were expanding, we imported west indians and africans, france imported North Africans Germany imported Turks and Japan said no, we will automate, miniturise and become productive without cheap labour. Guess which society still retains its culture and values the most?
Multiculturism is a left wing lie and will remain so as long as human nature holds sway over our actions, ie for ever.
A balanced approach to climate change 2:02pm on 13 Nov 2009 When I was at school in the seventies the prediction was that north sea oil would run out by the nineties. We still haven't hit 'peak oil' yet.
This and many other examples illustrate why the public distrust the advice/opinions given by politicians and experts.
Add in the fact that all we hear about are tax rises to pay for prevention of an unknown event and not a peep about the billions of humands on the other side of the world doing anything about it themselves and it's no wonder the public are sceptical.

The only solution is through population reduction. We are naturally going down this route in Europe, despite the bleatings of the religious/low cost worker brigade. If the rest of the world did this, not only would global warming if it exists be reduced but the finite resources of the world would last a lot longer.
How about green taxes on those who have more than one child?? The biggest impact any person can have in terms of carbon footprint is to have a child so why not shift the tax burden on to them?
Automation and productivity will naturally take the place of low pay/low skill jobs and I for one would prefer factories of robots to sweatshops.
Gordon Brown and the military 1:39pm on 13 Nov 2009 Brown cannot have it both ways, listening to his long winded and ultimately vague answers to questions this morning on today it became obvious that the man has no strategy and is a million miles away from being a decisive leader. The trouble with war is that you have to fight it, not with weasel words and political wriggling but with peoples lives. Something that Brown demonstrates time and again that he doesn't understand seing as he was the chancellor that cut the military budget to bits, yet allowed legions of civil servants to jump on the MOD's payroll.
Just as well the troops are loyal to the crown and not the government, the tanks would be straight on to the lawn of number 10, and rightly so.
The party of the poor 1:38pm on 12 Nov 2009 I am sick of politicias bleating on about the poor. What happened to democracy. I am fed up funding schemes to allow the feckless and stupid to continue their way of life.

We care far to much as a society and this attitude just breeds a lack of self reliance and self respect which will ultimately drag us all down.
The real debate has scarcely begun 1:34pm on 12 Nov 2009 Instead of point scoring against the various posters here, why don't we get back to the real issue. Brown hand wrote a poorly drafted letter that contained spelling mistakes. To anyone else it's no big deal, but to the recipient it must have been the last straw, if such a thing is possible after a childs death. Given that the subject was so sensitive, how could Brown have thought that anything less than perfect would have been good enough? He is the man that underfunded the military for 10 years while chancellor, he was the man who as Blairs number two backed him in the mission, and he is the man dithering about what to do and what the aim really is.
To me, these are the real issues.
Changing Britain's relationship with Europe 2:25pm on 29 Oct 2009 Cameron is in a no win situation, so is making the best of a very bad job. The mess that he will inherit from Brown is truly horrendous on all fronts.

Why does nobody ever pick up on the experience of Norway and Switzerland, both countries surrounded by the EU yet not subject to paying in vast sums and totally sovereign.

Ever had difficulty travelling to, or trading with either of them? Thought not. So next time some euro apologist cretin bangs on about how vital our membership is, just say Norway and Switzerland and watch them splutter as there is no arguement.

The only thing we have in common with the EU is geography, just about everything else is based on different principles which millions of my ancestors died fighting for.

I have lots of overseas friends but would I want to marry one? Not if I wanted a happy compatible relationship that's for sure. There are fundamental differences between us and the EU is a project which should be left to develop natually over centuries. Don't forget our history, we have been a unified nation for centuries, unlike most of the others in the EU, hence our lack of need to cosy up with others in fear of a big bad neighbour.

We can still be friends and trading partners but cultually and politically it will take decades to get closer.

Driving us down a road that we have not been asked to travel on will only create division and tensions and our politicians constantly fail to recognise this fact.
Census question questions 1:32pm on 28 Oct 2009 Poster 13 has it absolutely spot on, I repeat:

"Other than the name, age and sex of whoever is in the house at the relevent time, it's none of their damned business."

Exactly what purpose do they need more information on us for? Social engineering springs to mind.

I intend to give the bare minimum of info and just lie about the rest.
El Presidente 1:14pm on 27 Oct 2009 I am appalled to think that yet another failed polititian is jumping on the euro gravy train (Kinnock, Mandelsion etc etc).
Aside from my personal disgust at Blair he is just about the least likey unifying figure on the scene.
I suggest that only qualification for the EU top despot is to never have been a politician or lawyer. Perhaps then we will get someone grounded in reality along the lines of Lech Walensa. Or, how about this....the people having a choice and voting for their preferred candidtate!!
Sorry i'm being silly, only the 'right' candidate will win, such is the history of democracy in Europe.

Cameron is in a no-win situation, as Brown is desperate to tie this up before the election as (and I would put money on this) he needs brownie points to get him a fat job in Brussels once he is soundly kicked out of office, but unfortunately not on the dole like so many of his 'subjects'.
Will we miss the targets? 1:51pm on 21 Oct 2009 Poster 4 has it about right. Until the thousands of 'Brown jobsworths' are got rid of there will always be a huge incentive to maintain the status quo.
Proper accountability would go some way to addressing this culture but it's all to easy to blame the 'system' (see MP's expenses) than to stand up and take the rap.
Politicins by definition are in it for the power, so giving it away is totally against the reason for them doing the job in the first place. Anyone who believes politicians verbal diarrhoea about improving the country, lot of the common man, saving babies etc etc is too naive to deserve a vote.
Is all publicity good publicity? 1:34pm on 21 Oct 2009 Right at the start of this posting, blogger number 3 got it absolutely spot on. There's really nothing else to say on this subject. Well done!
