Will Abbott's victory trigger an election? 10:24pm on 01 Dec 2009 The Liberal Party has now moved completely away from the party that Menzies created. You could not believe anything they say any more. They have a problem as they need the National (Country) Party to form a government. They are not a National Party as they do not exist in some States of Australia, and create problems for the Liberal party as mionisters in government. Abbott forced single mothers out to work regardless of the problems this would cause for their young children. He developed policies with Howard to force young people into jobs with disgusting employers with little regard for their safety. They are now an untra-right wing conservative party that I hope are heading for electoral disaster. It would be very satisfying if he was the second conservative leaders to lose his seat in consecutive elections. How could you contrast Abbott with Rudd who enjoys respect whereever he travels to across the globe? Roll on the next election, I cannot wait, as I do not believe that Australians want a party led by Abbott to become a government.
Is Turnbull toast? 11:08pm on 27 Nov 2009 You are right Nick, Turnbull is a self made man and therefore does not have the "right to rule" mentality of the ultra-right Liberals. Are you aware that the area surrounding Port Phillip Bay has more cars than Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia? Is it any wonder that Melbourne has not had good rain in ten years? No person that has travelled in Europe or the USA can deny that climate change is dominated by people because the evidence is there to be seen. Tony Abbot was the person who almost destroyed young Australians when he was the Minister overseeing Centrelink, these people would never allow him to become Prime Minister. Joe Hockey has jewish roots yet uses an Irish name and a person like me with Irish ancestry understands their role in creating the Labor party. We are the party that delivers change as conservatives dislike change, and the ETS legislation makes the people responsible pay for it. The Liberal/National Party amendments allow the worst polluters to escape, and passes the blame to ordinary Australian households who are made to pay. I notice that legislation has been enacted to assist lower, middle and pensioners to pay their greatly increased costs for every day living. Howard left behind him the worst type of Liberals who dominated his government as Ministers now they are tearing their party assunder. There are no independants in the Senate as they have assisted the Liberals at some time in their life. Victorian Labor is responsible for Feilding's election and those responsible have been sidelined. Why was Rudd invited to the White House prior to Copenhagen because Obama recognises his intelligence and drive and seeks to run ideas with him? I hope that there is a double dissolution as Australia needs the removal of Howard's rump so the Liberal Party can return to the party that Menzies set up. Bring on the election for Australia's sake
The Republican Referendum: Ten Years On 10:21pm on 05 Nov 2009 Australia has reached the point in its history when it needs to become a republic. Any person who has flown into Heathrow airport knows that we are not recognised as British subjects any more. Australia is a continent in its own right, and is also not part of Asia, and will never be so. We need to develop a method to elect our president that is bipartisan and must work to enure this occurs. Australia has proven in the past that it will welcome new citizens and these people have assimilated into the Australian community and ethos. Consevatives do not want change, and cling to the past because of the power given to them. Other former nations of the British empire have become republics e.g. Canada and India, and now it is the time for Australia. I know I could never have the same regard for Charles as I do for his mother, and I believe that a majority of Australians have the same opinion.
Brand Australia 01:24am on 25 Sep 2009 My country needs to have an image that befits the 21st century. We are the people who built a modern nation in just over 2 centuries. Australia has achieved success on international sporting fields, music, fashion and eduction etc. We are accepted all over the world as a friendly, outgoing people. Our acceptance of people who migrated here is shown in multiculturism. We need a slogan that reminds other nations of what we have achieved,and we have the people to write such a message.
Victory or heist at the Oval? 07:12am on 25 Aug 2009 Hooray, I have not had so much fun in my long life. I must do it again as the poms picked up on my comments but ignored the ones they could not emulate. Anyway what about a great female dicus thrower and the pole vaulter eh.
Victory or heist at the Oval? 01:59am on 24 Aug 2009 I am not a bitter aussie Vame536 because I understand that Australia is building both a male and female cricket team when so many former players retired. I will always be disappointed when we lose to England because having lived among them I understand how little they win. Therefore, when they win occasionally, they cannot help themselves. Both my wife and I descend from people who escaped your overcrowded island in the middle of the 19th century, and none of them were convicts, but free settlers looking for a better home. The ashes is another example of a nation who considered themselves better than all others, and could not stomach being defeated by a colonial team. Therefore the trophy should be placed in a museum and another trophy struck. Win or lose we Australians welcome the team home and look forward to the next battle and we do not need open decked buses ever. I glory in how Europeans welcome Australians after they realize we are not English.
Victory or heist at the Oval? 10:45pm on 23 Aug 2009 I was living and teaching plumbing at Barking College when you won the ashes in 2005, and could not believe the rediculous hype England carried on with. I was there also when Australia destroyed England, in fact all of the Great Britain collonies at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. I was there also for the first four tests on Austrlian soil. I wore the top half of the tracksuit Australian's proudly wore to the Athen's Olympics and only left England as you lost the fifth test. Has England ever won 11 World Cups in one year as Australia did in 1999? Not only males but also our gorgeous females won them also, I can not hear you, of course you have not. Skite on because you have the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in the high humidity of New Delhi, I cannot wait as I know you hate heat and we are used to it in paradise.
China goes sweet and sour on Australia 11:32pm on 19 Aug 2009 China has a communist government which will never allow freedom and is by nature a bully. Nick you should remember the communist governments of the USSR and eastern Europe. All of these government removed freedom and were unsuitable to do business with. They succeeded in reducing their nations to bankruptcy causing them to fall, as their people wanted to return to freedom. The late Pope John Paul 11 was instrumental in overcoming them and Europe is a better continent now. Australia has always believed in freedom and equality, until John Howard, and thankfully he has been removed by the Australian people. We are resource rich, and China needs our resources, and we need to sell to them to improve our life style.
Obama stardust for teflon Rudd? 00:03am on 10 Aug 2009 Obama would like Kevin Rudd because they both have a realistic understanding of the needs of working people in their nations. Rudd has done a tremendous amount to help Australia through the current economic climate. Further, as we progress into 2010 people will see how much his government assisted Australians to overcome problems not of their own making. Turnbull is a Merchant Banker and is the same ilk, as those whose greed for wealth, caused the world-wide financial crisis. Rudd has sought to reverse the inane privatization policies of the Howard Government, and we now see the development of an excellent educational environment for young Australians to grow and develop in.
Rudd unlikely to do as Romans do on Rio 01:31am on 11 Jul 2009 Why would any intelligent Australian take any notice of what Greg Sheridan wrote. China is a major trading partner of Australia and our mandarin speaking Prime Minister Kevin Rudd knows how to deal with them. No one in the consevative side of politics in Australia has any diplomatic skills so why listen to anything they say. There are plenty of examples where British diplomacy or power failed when Britain was an empire eg Khartoom. Just watch the Labor Government work to get him released as they also have a Chinese Australian as a Minister (Penny Wong) and what an asset she would be when compared with Julie Bishop. Just leave it to the professionals and butt out.
