Preston too hasty to sack Irvine 2:29pm on 30 Dec 2009 Good blog again Paul, I have to say you have a great knowledge of Championship football. I agree with much of what you said, struck me as a very strange decision to sack Irvine, and I would be very surprised if Preston are getting any investment in January.
Spain's best and worst - The Phil Awards 10:40pm on 29 Dec 2009 Sorry, I've got to agree that this blog is poor. Naming Real Madrid as the biggest underachievers is just silly, they're only 2 points off your 'Top Team' Barcelona, after more or less constructing a team from scratch in the summer. You can't realistically expect them to do better than a team who won 6 trophies in 2009, especially when they've been without Ronaldo and Kaká for a number of games. Atlético surely should have been nominated in at least one of your negative categories, the 3rd biggest and richest club in Spain 2 points of relegation at Christmas... I think this would have been more interesting if you had focused more on specific players who have done well/ dissapointed, (e.g. Higuaín vs. Benzema)Lastly, just a minor thing, why don't you use accents in any of the team or player names, it looks ridiculous without in my opinion.

They've not bid, and I'm sure if they did they'd have no chance anyway, too near London, not known as a football place and too small.

As others have already commented, which league each towns' respective cluba are in in 2009 counts for very little when we're talking about 2018, there is no way of knowing what will happen before then. Using your example of Hull, 5 seasons ago they were in Division 3! Your comment that Hull are in a stronger financial position than other cities is laughable, it was only last month that Hull's accountants Deloitte warned the club could go out of business if they were relegated. Putting Leeds and the Sheffield teams in the bracket of "small clubs" with Hull is also bizarre. I don't see Hull's bid as a viable option for many reasons, firstly the fact that although the KC is a modern and reasonably attractive stadium, it currently seats 25,000, much less than the 40,000 needed by FIFA. Hull couldn't fill a stadium that big, so in my opinion the decision makers in this process need to look at cities and areas where having a 40,000+ seat stadium is viable, i.e. larger cities where there is an established football fan base.

I'm also surprised to read Matt's comment that Bramall Lane is seen as a more likely choice than Hillsborough, that wouldn't be my perspective on the matter.
Stately Perez defends big spending 02:41am on 18 Jul 2009 I agree with #33, please in future use subtitles instead of an interpreter talking over the video, firstly it is much clearer, and secondly for people who understand the language anyway it means they can listen to what Pérez is actually saying directly (as no translation is ever perfect, a point you make yourself in your blog Mihir.)
England World Twenty20 player ratings 11:50pm on 15 Jun 2009 I think 6 for Colly is very generous. He got 63 runs in 5 innings without ever looking like doing any damage, and his captaincy was, in my opinion, as terrible as always. He is the perfect example of a great team man not set out for being the leader (if you look at his captaincy record England have only won 17 of the 37 completed games he has captained, added to the incident against New Zealand.) I disagree with the comment that Foster "didn't embarrass himself with the bat" also, I think he showed that being able to clear the ropes against some county seamer at Chelmsford does not mean you're good enough to bat 6 for England, as he did today, regardless of the form of the game. His keeping was exceptional though. Lastly, I don't agree with the criticism of Shah that's flying around at the moment. I think he, Pietersen and Bopara are the only English batsman who have a plan at Twenty20, Shah is not frightened to give himself a few balls at the start in the knowledge that he can step it up later (see the India match), and his SR was only 4 lower than Bopara's. This is in contrast to Luke Wright who unfortunately tries to smack every ball, and as correctly noted got caught out by the increase in class.
