The FSA ignored this since it's inception.
Only addressed in late 2008, after the horse had bolted.
This effectively forced some banks into state ownership.
Now the timing of this indicates that some people wanted control of large banks, or they were incompetent in their roles.
Make up your own minds.

In most large Financial Firms anyone who doesn't tow the party line, will be sidelined, made a scapegoat of left with no option but to move onto pastures new. Even over regulatory matters.
The problem is Banks have an egotistical structure, interestingly German Landesbanks have a more level committee structure yet they still got their fingers burnt.
Although as a consultant you can challenge the status quo, and be heard. I've been in both positions.

Spot on, although Bankers Pay is an issue, it is not the biggest issue facing UK's exit from recession.
It's now the biggest smokescreen to cover the required reduction of public debt. Which has been growing out of control for over 10 years, partly funded by the tax revenue from the City which has dried up. And reduced tax and NI from employees due to rising unemployment, lower tax from companies struggling to survive.
The government won't reduce this debt as it is part of GB's redistribution of wealth, through taxation to benefits.
GB will struggle to get re-elected(sorry elected, as he hasn't been yet) if he doesn't cut public debt, he has no chance if he does.
Therefore he needs a diversionary tactic, like this one.

Twenty years ago I worked for a high st bank, and then you could apply for a loan for a holiday, the only extra criteria then was that the repayment period could be no longer than 12 months on a loan for a holiday.
Normal credit risk assessment applied for this type of loan as for others such as car purchase or home improvement.
I also seem to remember that the loan risk assesment for any loan application was looked upon much more favourably, if the applicant took out the wholly extortionate payment protection.
Or was I just dreaming that last bit, to protect me from any Libel prosecution???

What RBS's results say about QE 2:57pm on 07 Aug 2009 To all the posters commenting on the contradiction between the Govt castigating the banks for not lending more to UK SMEs and Retail customers, and the Govts and FSAs requirement that they need to hold higher capital ratios.
I've been raising this quandry on here for too long now, highlighting the incompetence of this Govt. The fact they put more effort into Spin than effectual policies says everything.
Also the fact that Peston hasn't commented on this contradiction since RBS and Lloyds were part nationalised, and GB started his blame spree on the banks only for the failings of the UK economy.
Don't let this big con trick fade from your memories.

If I remember correctly, they are a variance on preference shares with interest rates at approx 13%.
Not wholly sure of the type of share, however confident in the interest rate. Not Ordinarys to avoid triggering stock ex takeover rules above 30%.
So in the case of Barclays the Middle East were cheaper without state control, although they got a great deal with the convertibles tagged on. Dilution would have come from Govt or Middle East, no one would have funded a general rights issue, so that is a red herring.

Your post sounds so far fetched I'm inclined to belive this could be true.
If only Brown was that clever, I might have some respect for him.
