Orange's 'unlimited' iPhone 11:50am on 03 Nov 2009 The more I think about this the more cynical part of me wonders if this is a deliberate move by Orange.

Demonstrate how Apple have forced their hand through the deal by mimicking O2's plans...

Before we just assumed that O2 put these deals up because they had a monopoly, where as now, we can presume that these deals are the only way the networks can make carrying the hanset profitable...

I wonder if this is just a marketting ploy - leverage the consumer to lob rocks at Apple and allow them to renegotiate. Can't see it working tho...

Smart move by Voda sitting this one out for now. I would imagine a short term loss leader might work for them and realign the market.
Orange's 'unlimited' iPhone 10:15am on 03 Nov 2009 I was expecting Orange to be a bit more innovative about this - taking forward their Animals plans and the pick and choose options you see on every other device they sell.

This Rigid iPhone tariff format winds me up a bit, andi originally thought itwas just O2 being nerdy about it.

I suppose this shows how much influence Apple have over the deals, which I think is to the detriment of their userbase. Surely Apple are making enough money through the App store and iTunes now - do they really need to gouge the operators as well?
Who wins from an Orange iPhone? 1:33pm on 28 Sep 2009 I for one think this is a pretty good thing.

I have had an Orange contract for many years now, and don't personally agree with other comments that Orange are too expensive. Orange have a pretty slick Customer Service operation, particularly with Orange Premier, and their insurance package is brilliant. I know some people that have had nightmares and wouldn't touch Orange with a bargepole, but for me its been a trouble free relationship. I think you get a better service for the money, but that just me. YMMV...

I think the interesting thing will be whether Orange choose to use their existing tariff structure with a simple iPhone bolt on to cover the unique features, or keep the model o2 used with iPhone only tariffs. This was the biggest stumbling block for prospective iPhone customers, who thought the ongoing costs on top of the purchase price were too expensive, including package elements that were of no real interest to the end user, and couldn't be changed. Orange have an interesting take on tariffs, which in my view at least is quite innovative. It will be interesting to see how this evolves after the T-Mobile merger too...

The comments about contract periods is bang on as well. O2 haven't really got their hooks into the newcomers, who bought the phone on merit in the last 12 months, and these are the guys who may move over to Orange. However, the early adopters and fanboys are the ones in real trouble, as you can bet your bottom dollar they went up to the 3GS a few months back, and may end up kicking themselves if Orange release a better deal.

Speaking as someone who had a company iPhone on o2 in the past, I would welcome the chance to get my own one on Orange legitimately.
Chrome - living in a Google world? 4:39pm on 08 Jul 2009 Goos post, but I would argue that Chrome and Windows 7 arent really direct competitors, at least not yet.

ChromeOS is a netbook flavour of what will do doubt be Debian or Fedora, and appears to be targetting the cut down netbook sector. I think it will be extremely difficult for them to compete with Linpus and Ubuntu's Netbook Remix (which is impressive I might add!). I assume it will also be free.

Windows 7 is a desktop OS and is paid software, which something like 60% of users get OEM when they buy a branded computer, i.e. the have no real choice. The rest are corporates on Volume licences, and they get pretty much whatever they want with downgrade rights and such. Netbooks and Desktops are a different part of the computer users world so you cant really compare apples with apples here.

I don't believe MS will ever make a netbook OS that people will want to use, and Chrome at least appears so far to not target the desktop arena, so Chrome probably doesnt really worry MS right now. That said, the nerdy image and operational issues that used to exist with Linux are fading away, leaving an opportunity for people to make the migration to Linux on desktop easier, and probably more desirable.

That said, if Apple were to make OSX legitimately available to non-Mac hardware, then I would suggest the tide would certainly start to turn away from MS, and the they would start to shake in their boots!
Apple - angering the fans? 12:07pm on 09 Jun 2009 I think people are also forgetting that much of the features described at WWDC yesterday will still be available on the 3G and some even on the original iPhone - its software, which we all get as a free update on the same day.

Hardware wise the update includes a few cheesy extras, which if I were buying new today I would consider, but not neccesarily buy tho.

The 3GS seems to be a stop gap product, something to compete directly with the newer smartphones to keep the Apple stock prices up. The iPhone 4 is going to need a lot of money to develop and really we dont know what technology it should have in it yet. Banks are tight as you like right now, so they want to finance it internally no doubt.

I think a lot of people will be less irate when they see iPhone OS 3.0 running on their existing 3G, and much of this "distress" is due to people not fully understanding the difference between the hardware and the software capabilities. Your "old" 3G isn't useless yet!
