Big turnout in Totnes primary 1:23pm on 05 Aug 2009 Open primaries are definitely the way forward in selecting candidates for elections. The evidence from Totnes suggests that it is potentially a good way to get voters more engaged with the political process. It should not be seen, however, as a way of heading off widespread calls for replacing the first-past-the-post system with a form of proportional representation. The Tories are vehemently opposed to PR, so maybe that's why they're pushing the idea of primaries.

If we choose to adopt primaries as the norm, then the running of them should not be left to the corrupting influence of the party machines. There would have to be some form of regulation and oversight which, unfortunately, would cost money.

My son worked bloody hard for his A-levels, is likely to get straight As and wasn't even granted an interview for a place at medical school. He also would make a damn good doctor, but finds himself caught between the monied middle classes at private schools and the so-called disadvantaged in the inner cities.

Discrimination of any kind is not fair, whether it be positive or negative.

Government plans FOI restrictions 4:56pm on 11 Jun 2009 If we have learned anything over the past three weeks it's that the actions of anyone in a position of public trust and responsibility must be open to scrutiny. The Head of State should not be exempt from this requirement. If the Windsors don't like the implications of the FOI Act, then they should give up their hereditary privileges and make way for an elected Head of State. The laws of this country must apply equally to everyone, no matter who your parents were.
