Lisbon fiercely debated 11:27am on 25 Sep 2009 The problem with the debate in Ireland is that both sides yes or no don't seem too interested in what is in the Treaty and explaining what is in the treaty to the people. Most people voted no last time because they didn't understand the treaty and didn't trust the government. Regardless of the result I think that this will remain the same due to the campaign tactics of BOTH sides.
Lisbon: A Pandora's box 4:53pm on 19 Jun 2009 Ireland is perfectly entitled to another vote on Lisbon. Ultimately Lisbon will make the EU a bit more democratic and help it work better. This is better than nothing. However the reason the no side won the arguement was that they ran a better campaign and the yes side didn't explain the treaty and its effects both positive and negative very well. The provisions will help but its up to the yes side to better explain their position this time round.
Eurosceptics triumphant 09:45am on 08 Jun 2009 In Ireland the status quo has remained the same. Sinn fein the only party that is anyway eurosceptic will likely retain a seat. Libertas may get a seat but from a U.K. point of view their views are pro-EU However like the U.K the governing parties have been hit hard. Did eurosceptics win only in the U.K. or did parties with similar views gain in other countries?
Shift to the right for rural Hungary 3:57pm on 03 Jun 2009 Irish Farmers have similar issues. A litre of milk in shops Ireland costs around 1.30. A major milk proccesser in Ireland pays farmers as little as 20cent per litre. In Ireland if CAP goes so will a huge portion of farmers in Ireland. The EU isn't the problem its the power exercised by supermarkets and proccessers. Ultimatly farmers have to sell milk any at any one time there is only a certain amount of excess capacity within one firm so for many farmers it is very difficult to switch to a proccesser that pays more. A large number of farmers however would be needed to switch proccesser to impact on price.
Declan's democracy 3:38pm on 03 Jun 2009 As for Libertas I won't be voting for them as I don't know what they stand for or what their message is. Sometimes they act as if they genuinely want to improve the EU and other times they sound like the BNP. Libertas opposes the Lisbon treaty even though it will make the EU a bit more democratic. However ultimately the only way the EU will attain a form of democracy that would satisfy most eurosceptics is for EU leaders to give the power they have to the people. This would mean major change within the EU something only the heads of government in the EU can do. Ganley also hasn't satisfactorily addressed the issues surrounding how Libertas is funded.
