Have you heard a chiffchaff this week? 8:16pm on 02 Oct 2009 Yes, twice in slightly different locations about half a mile apart (same bird?) South East of Nottingham.
Ideas for Autumnwatch 2:42pm on 13 Jun 2009 Please do not change this format, it is the spotaneity of a live broadcast that is part of its appeal not to mention a running thread of the various 'stories' as they develop. By all means add to it by way of increasing the amount prerecorded material and if that means extending the runtime (either per evening or number of weeks) so be it. Given the amount of unappealing programmes on TV at present this would be a welcome addition! Why not add more programmes to the schedule and use your idea of 'on the road' material as Spring/Autumnwatch specials? Judging by the number of contributions and messages from viewers how could you lose?
Ideas for Springwatch 2:26pm on 13 Jun 2009 Thoroughly enjoyed this year's Springwatch. I thought the new team provided a good balance and Chris Packham's contribution, particularly of the real science, was excellent. In fact it was the increased use of the scientific aspects that made this programme more appealing than in the past. I have one criticism and that is the inclusion of the anthropomorphic VT stories, I simply do not see the need for them as the story they tell is fascinating enough without trivialising it in this way. I am not sure why they are felt necessary and who they are supposed to appeal to, can't be the very young as they are all likely to be asleep and there is no need to 'dumb down' for older children (or adults for that matter) there is enough of that approach elsewhere on TV..
Filming kites at Gigrin 9:43pm on 28 May 2009 I haven't been to Gigrin but have visited other feeding sites in Wales. It is a fantastic spectacle watching so many of these marvellous birds. Not only do they know when to gather but sink and circle lower and lower as the time for feeding approaches. I do have a concern however. By feeding them in this way are we altering their behaviour such that they no longer have the need to forage and hunt for food as they would do if they weren't fed? Or is the amount given so comparatively small compared to their total requirement that it makes no difference?
Have you heard a cuckoo? 9:25pm on 28 May 2009 I saw a cuckoo in S Notts four or five weeks ago (middle of April)
I saw and heard at least one cuckoo in the Elan valley (mid-Wales) during the week of 26th April.
