Are you tempted to take part in a national art event? 6:19pm on 17 May 2009 There is an attitude that participation is more important in shows like the the RA Summer Show than winning, which is laudable. But art is not sport (despite so often being lumped together in cultural strategies and government bodies) and you have to question where a lot of this art would exist if it were not on the walls of the Royal Academy? Sheer numbers seem to impress and I think this places emphasis on the wrong aspect of what art can offer, despite Joseph Bouys' truism that everyone is an artist. Personally I am more interested in travelling to see a piece of artwork or a project based on its own merits, than visiting an art jumble sale.
