The Revisitations of Doctor Kermode 4:08pm on 13 Oct 2009 For me it has to be the Rian Johnson noir thriller film 'Brick', couldn't make my mind up whether i loved it or hated it on the first watch due to its unique high school hard boiled detective story. It certainly took a while to get used to the 30's style slang speech as well but on the second watch, something clicked and i instantly got it, i could appreciate the decent story, the good acting, the well written script and its now in my top 5 films of all time.

Totally agree with you on Howard The Duck, one of the all time great "Rubbish" films...however judging by your recent hp6 review surely your favourite big budget film in recent years must be 'Prisoner Of Azkaban'? It's definitely in my top 5

Surely the running trend of directors turning a once promising career into a laughable pastiche must come to a head with M. Night Shyamalan, i've recently been watching through all of his films and i still can't grasp the fact that the same person who wrote/directed 'Unbreakable' and 'The sixth sense' also wrote/directed 'Lady in the Water'. It once again proves your theory Mark, that when a director begins to beleive their own hype, beleive people who call them an auteur that is when they start getting sloppy with their work. However despite the decline of his most recent work i still have to admire him as a film maker for at least trying something different which is the same reason i admire most of QT's work however good/bad it can be.
Review: PUBLIC ENEMIES 5:57pm on 03 Jul 2009 Just watched 'Public Enemies' today and i have to completely agree with the good doctors comments, there was an underlying feeling i had when watching the film that something was just not right. I felt the film was conflicted in its portrayal of John Dillinger as a likeable antihero and that it was doing a pretty poor job of conveying the ideas of the celebrity buzz surrounding his actions with the general public building him up as a 'Robin Hood' character which (i'm sure Dr.K would agree with) was done so much better by Andrew Dominik's film 'The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. With regards to the Good cop/Bad guy coin side idea there was just not enough information regarding Christian Bales character to achieve this, unlike in Heat where we saw Al Pachino's character's miserable homelife, respect for his enemies intelligence etc. which was more helpful to this idea in my opinion. Public Enemies was by no means a bad film, far from it however it did feel like there was one piece of the puzzle missing from the final cut.
Can movies still cause a moral panic? 11:20am on 16 Jun 2009 you have to take a look at the past and realise that our society is built upon violence, for example there were massive conflicts like the crusades, ww1 and ww2 where tens of thousands of people were killed. Even today, with the war on terror, we see shocking footage on the six oclock news as well as extremely in-depth reports about brutal murders. The media need to look at the bigger picture rather than blame a subpar danny dyer movie in my opinion
Pieces of blog and even more of your 3D thinking 1:53pm on 13 May 2009 My local small cinema, 'The Windmill' in Littlehampton will always hold a place in my heart. It was the only cinema near me that showed 'The assasination of jesse james by the coward robert ford' nuff said.
