The Revisitations of Doctor Kermode 1:19pm on 13 Oct 2009 I think I needed to see a lot of the Bergman canon twice for them to really sink in. Perhaps it could be put down to my lack of knowledge at the time but I certainly didn't appreciate Persona on the first viewing. I do normally try and see everything at least twice, even with the worst movies there's usually something that I missed the first time.

However on the flip side there's also been a few films that I've thought were fantastic but have never wanted to see again as long as I live. Dancer in the Dark for one and the first time I saw Inland Empire it scared the crap out of me so much I didn't sleep for a month. That image of Laura Dern's twisted face still creeps into my nightmares sometimes.
Silent Movie Special 9:13pm on 12 Jun 2009 Echoing the old Balazs sentiments eh? He felt almost exactly the same (although of course he was talking about the advent of the sound film itself). Is DrK confirming, 80 odd years on, that poor film sound has indeed robbed us of the ability to interpret the language of the face?

I think perhaps you're jumping to conclusions somewhat. Hunger for instance, used its sound & music with the sort of marvelous restraint that would've certainly pleased Balazs or Pudovkin. Not all modern cinema is as subtle as an audial sledgehammer.

I must say however, that your sentiments on the state of pop music are way off base. There's some fantastic pop out there at the moment and I speak as somebody well versed in pre Lead Belly music.
Review: Terminator Salvation 8:59pm on 12 Jun 2009 Lol and other such internet jargon. Nice call on debunking the 'they don't like me cos I've directed ads' thing. Back in the day that was the bread and butter, Mike Leigh's McDonald's ads were particularly classic!
Avast ye blogarrrrrs: Movie piracy and you 10:57pm on 10 May 2009 It seems to me that the problem with modern piracy is not one that can be solved by any one industry alone. There are those within the music biz who feel that the arts should simply adapt and find new revenue streams and while the willingness to move with the times is commendable, it doesn't address the real issue.

The fact is (and the sheer numbers illegally downloading are testament to this) that there is a whole generation that have grown up with an extremely warped understanding of intellectual property. Things will only get better when the industry stops trying to deal with the fallout or adapt to accommodate this opinion that one shouldn't have to pay for film or music. Education is the answer - far too many people simply don't view it as stealing.
