Suggest a story 5:49pm on 24 Jul 2009 Have listeners experienced the following situation - when switchboard people lie on the phone because an employee doesn't want to speak to a legitimate caller.

Found the solution to this. If a switchboard person says they will put you through to the person you want to speak to, but then checks with them, comes back to you (with their voice changed) and tells you the other person is in a meeting (!), the way around this in the future is to ask to speak to the person you wish to talk to, and if the switchboard person asks who is calling, tell them, 'Well once you confirm they are free to take my call I will tell you then, as there is no point in telling you that otherwise is there'. Bet you they still come back though to say the other person has just gone into a meeting, and the final retort could be 'that's OK as I am not who I say I am either'

I have given up chasing people to answer legitimate e-mail enquiries, or voicemails, then when I do catch up with them, being told how busy they are - when you are told what they have on their plate, it would equate to only one thing I may have done at any given time in an average day in my days of working. How do they get and keep these jobs?

Cannot say what job I had but it was top level and had huge responsibilities of networking with the great and the good. Would love to see how they would cope doing the same job.

When people tell lies, they are merely declaring their inadequacy, surely it is easier to answer an enquiry there and then rather than fudge and delay.

Has anyone other ideas for getting past the switchboard? Some switchboard people are friendly and it is obvious they are embarrassed at being instructed to tell blatent lies, so sometimes, if I am having a bad day, I tell them I am too old to be given that 'they are in a meeting routine'. They usually agree that it is not good enough of their colleagues.

Good morning. 10:57pm on 02 Jun 2009 Correct me if I am wrong, but as for decades I have lived in a constituency of a safe seat (for the wrong side i.e. Mr. Conway for example), I have always thought that the 'seat' in Parliament and in Local Elections should be just that 'a seat' which, like musical chairs, should alternate so that local councillors and MPs should share the role so that a type of shadow councillor/MP is facilitated without duplication. It would work like this. You visit 'your voting choice' of local councillor and/or MP and they book time to represent your views in a shared 'seat'. That way, your view has a 'better chance' of getting through the system and presented with supporting passion. The seat, like the role of Monarchy, should be facilitated only when occupied. The only other way of ensuring true democracy would be if we could all stand up in Parliament ourselves, put a question forward, and get the answer 'there and then' without notice. OK not practical so unattainable, but the option I have outlined herein is attainable. What does everyone think ?
Listeners' Opinion Poll: the winning question....drum roll please 6:03pm on 18 May 2009 I live in a neighbourhood who wouldn't even knock on the door if blue bottles were at the window. Have lived in many places in the UK all my life, this is the first place I have ever lived where neighbours do not want to know each other, apart from a brief nod or rare small talk chat. Sorry I cannot participate in radio interview for obvious reasons.
Even bereavement doesn't affect them, years ago it was common that a neighbour anywhere one lived would invite you in their home for a coffee at such times as bereavement. Then again, wait until sorrow or adversity affects their lives....... I have friends who live elsewhere who have similar neighbourhoods. Sad but true.

That said, nobody is ever interested in the fact some people do not have a TV (I know somebody in that situation), because of cost of the TV and then the BBC licence especially.

BBC Radio 4 is excellent, but if you have no visitors, there is no visual contact with the outside world if you are on a fixed income or very ill and living alone. The Licensing Authority could be a great conduit with the BBC and Government to rectify matters for those deserving of help. Please, somebody pick up this point. If a Politician can get money to clean a moat, then surely an elderly or sick person should have their TV licence waived AND a free small flat screen TV, bearing in mind it is alleged another Member of Parliament bought one for £8,000 with tax payers money presumably. How many people in the UK do not have a TV and if they do cannot afford to switch it on because of the licence fee. Never mind climate change footprint with holidays, what holidays for some !!!!
Suggest a story or an opinion poll question 6:02pm on 16 May 2009 Your winning question 'Do you know your neighbour' you should really be asking why being 'busy' is more important than inviting your neighbour in for a cup of coffee or enquiring if they need anything if they are ill, especially if another neighbour is on their own, elderly etc etc

Wait until someone else's circumstances hits them, such as bereavement, wonder if they would appreciate excuses then.

We live in a selfish society, it is as simple as that

May I submit the question that if the BBC could charge viewers for opting in instead of a compulsory licence fee for all, then that way people who are on fixed incomes can at least access other network TV programmes that are free.

Alternatively, high fees paid by the BBC to celebrities should be reduced and networking should be done with the Licensing Authorities to fund licence fees for those who cannot afford same and therefore cannot watch television.

We should not always assume everyone can afford what the most of society can afford. It is all very well various organisations funding computers for social groups but not when others do not even own a TV and/or cannot afford to pay the compulsory licence. A TV is the only company some people have.
