What we'll be building in the next six months 7:51pm on 07 May 2009 Yep, I agree, the red button banner should not be there as there is no need for it. If the red button works on a particular channel it will load when pressed, if not - then not - no problem - so simple an imbecile could work it out.

Years ago when digital was first launched I was looking forward to the digital text as I was a very fond user of ceefax/teletext. Boy was I disappointed when I got to use it for the first time - abysmally slow, and still is, but the worst of it is the lack of interesting content. I can spend a fair bit of time on ceefax/teletext, but not a minute longer using digital text.

Welcome to some new initials - DRM, HDCP, DTCP and AACS! 7:26pm on 07 May 2009 Andy, I believe John Williams (jwgalaxy, post 107. At 8:28pm on 04 May 2009) is referring to the large media producers, mainly American, who persist in the futile attempt to protect their programs using DRM which neither archives the stated aims of protection or allowing the consumer to watch the program/film etc. as it prevents the consumer from doing so on various pieces of hardware that the consumer would legitimately use, even though the consumer would have paid legally for the right to own a copy of and watch said media. Thus the broadcasters, BBC included, are pressured into adapting the DRM systems in order to broadcast the media companies programs to their audience. The BBC may not be making the profits here, but is is clear that the companies whose shows are broadcast over the BBC are making profits out of the UK license fee payer as the BBC has to pay them for the broadcasting rights to do so.

I just signed up this minute so I could post a comment here, and before going any further would like to start with thanking Andy and his colleagues for striving to allow as many HD programmes shown on the BBC as possible and am sure that the majority of posters on this forum understand what you are trying to do, however...

Just for the record as a BBC license fee paying citizen I do understand the dilemma of having DRM'd programmes from producers other than the BBC shown over the BBC broadcast system that I along with millions of others have paid for over previous years and will continue to pay for over many years to come, or not using DRM and therefore not being able to broadcast the DRM'd shows in HD and having them broadcast them in SD only.

My opinion and request to the BBC is this: Please do not allow DRM to cripple the system we as UK citizens are forced to pay for, I would like to keep the broadcast system funded by myself and other license fee payers fundamentally open in design and for the benefit, control and use of solely UK citizens (as it is a public service funded by UK citizens) not the foreign media creators. It is our system and we should call the shots and if this creates a situation where we cannot view foreign material in HD then I am completely happy with that even if that situation was to last indefinitely. I would like a system that has no DRM whatsoever as I along with a number of other people I know personally have been bitten in the butt by DRM which has cost us dearly for content which we can no longer use even though we legally paid for the use of it.

It offends me greatly to have DRM forced on myself and others whilst simultaneously being forced to burden the cost of such a system. If this goes ahead I will no longer be in favour of paying the license fee and will lobby my local politician for the scrapping of the license fee altogether.

Once again, thank you Andy and team for trying to get as many HD shows on the BBC, but I would rather have only BBC HD content than have DRM poison the system. Just my view and feelings on the subject, and I understand that other peoples may or may not be different.
