Deep-sea heat: now there's the rub 9:03pm on 16 Jul 2009 Thanks Tim - you've obviously got a soft spot for the Eocene, so I wonder if you can enlighten on a few outstanding puzzles the article poses. For example, what triggered the initial warming which led to a 5-9 degree C rise? And how much of a scientific consensus is there around the idea that the temperature rise led to a 'massive dissociation of marine methane hydrates', as the report suggests?

Is the climate warming or cooling? 10:35pm on 07 Jul 2009 The graph on page 11 of the report might provide some insight to the argument. It illustrates that we've had some very hot years in the past decade (2005 looks like a scorcher, just as Sheffield Tim's stats suggest) but that there is no overall warming trend between 1998-2008 simply because of the 'hot flush' which took place in 1998.
Is the climate warming or cooling? 5:48pm on 07 Jul 2009 The main point the authors are trying to get across is that it is easy to cherry pick a period to reinforce a point of view. Say you want to proove that the Earth isnt warming up (ergo climate change is bunkum): you can simply cite the period between 1998-2008, when there is no real trend in warming according to the study. But if you want to demonstrate that the Earth is warming up, then all you have to do is talk about the period between 1975-2008, which shows a substantial overall warming.
Climate change to blame for Scottish flock's shock weight loss? 10:24pm on 06 Jul 2009 If you follow the link in the blog from 'markedly warmer', there's an interesting graph showing how the North Atlantic Oscillation has changed since 1860. When the NAO index is positive, Europe experiences warm winters (i.e. winters that will 'shrink' sheep). As you can see from the graph, a positive phase kicks off in the late 1970s, but there's another biggie in the early 1900s, which is 'comparable in length to the recent positive phase' according to the report.

Or it might not have.
Dr Miller writes: 'Global temperature change can skew the sex ratio of TSD [Temperature-dependent Sex Determination] animals and might have played a significant role in the demise of long-extinct species, notably the dinosaurs, particularly if the temperature change resulted in a preponderance of males. Current global warming also represents a risk for extant TSD species.'
Do big brains stem from cooler climates? 9:02pm on 25 Jun 2009 Who knows. Scientists seem to be at a loss deciding whether bigger brains = more intelligent or whether a spot of DIY neural reorganisation and 'connectional modification' will do the job.
