I for one am NOT. The British are portayed as crooks, sly, underhand and not to be trusted. Perhaps you would like to write a SERIOUS piece on how the popular media influences individuals in society by the constant reinforcement of steriotypes. Who has the real power I wonder?

- Robert did you ever study statistical analysis? Making statements like that gives you no credibility. It turns a meaningless statistic into something which is over dramatised rubbish.
How early should something be done? 07:03am on 08 Sep 2009 An important subject. The research is clear, the required methods and tools are available, but the level of monitoring required is impractical. If it were practical it would be totally unacceptible to a society proud to talk of the freedom of its individuals.
Freedom, by definition, implies that the individual is free to do good or bad, as interpreted by society. The bad results of this freedom often shock, but it is part of the price we pay for living in our society.
If we feel strongly enough to want to severely limit our freedoms, then that is the way we should go. Its up to us, as a society, to change. Until then these cases will constantly plague us.
Hard-core smokers 08:55am on 30 Jul 2009 I agree with all that Mark Easton says. Its what he doesn't say that troubles me. Everything is logical; decision making at a pragmatic level for instance. The fact that 'hard core' smokers use the most addictive drug on the planet is blanked out of the argument. This is a curious lack of understanding for our 'home' correspondent. Yes hard core smokers are faced with logical decisions about their habit and its consequenses. The truth is that they are not operating on a purely logical level when they crave nicotine and persue the habit. At that time, this is the only driver and everything else is irrelevent to them.

The department's mentioned paragraph is not confusing about prioritisation. The previous sentence to the one quoted is: "The decision on prioritisation will be taken on the basis of epidemiological evidence, vaccine supply and capacity of the NHS to implement the programme. This decision will be subject to further work over the summer period."
What makes a nonsense of the whole list is the last item: "all others not in the above groups". In other words everybody!!!
Map of the Week: We are animals 07:52am on 01 May 2009 The conservationists start with the premise that 'threatened' species are savable by human intervention. This is falasy. Nature abhors constantsy and constantly reinvents itself to increase biodiversity. Older models may regretably fall by the wayside, but without this rigourous selection of the fittest we would have a lifeless planet. Yes by all means, where it is clear that humans are instrimental in a species demise, lets do something about it, but please lets not forget the funimentals when putting it into practice.
