Are the Democrats losing their way? 8:13pm on 23 Nov 2009 Interesting how the Republicans are against big governments yet they fill bills with pork and fight to keep unnecessary military installations in thier districts and gave the private banks the largest amount of taypayer money in the history of the world.. They don't want government looking at corrupt healthcare providers, they supported the self-regulated SEC with the results being a worldwide financial collapse. Interesting also how the Republicans try to blame the government for the misdeeds of the banks. Granted the government was culpable in the financial crisis, but it was a Republican congress and White House. Republicans like to leave out facts and the truth when they don't fit their agenda. The Right wing is committed to seeing Obama fail and they do not care about the US, only making sure that their banking and business allies continue to make hugh profits at the expense of the people. Amazing how the grass-roots of the Republicans are the ones hurt most by their policies yet they come back for more abuse based on some jingle lines invented by the cynical media mouths. Congress is a collection of officials put in office by big business and banking interest. They do not represent the people and are there to protect the interest of big business. Any benefit to the people is a conincidence. Basically, the governments of the world have been doing buisness with the Chinese and Chinese business is corrupt and that has been adopted by the West, not that the West was in some state of purity, they just didn't use the open arrogance that they now use. All you have to do is watch some Republican on TV defending the denial of healthcare to millions and notice that they have no reservations in making statments that they know are completely untrue but play well with the ignorant. Greed has increased with the financial collapse, not decreased. Congress thinks they have done a lot when they get from the private sector what could be taken anyway. Field mice stealing corn fallen to the ground. Congress is the roadblock to recovery because they are only concerned about themselves and those vested interest who put them there. You can follow the money like the trail of a slug.
The Democrats are owned by the same people as the Republicans. Democrats believe it is prudent to give the people something whereas, the Republicans would rather it all go to the rich. The imbalance in power will be adjusted one way or another, but power is usually not given up voluntarily so some major changes and events will need to happen. The rich always believe that the ability of the people to endure abuse is endless and therefore are always surprised when the people revolt.

No pressure there then, Mr Musk 7:40pm on 23 Nov 2009 All the public dollars spent on space flight development ends up being a welfare payment to the private sector. Always crying about their corporate taxes, they benefit beyond anything a citizen might receive from the government after paying taxes for a lifetime. The private sector receives many more benefits and calling it the private sector is incorrect. Public leaches, favored few, those with extreme political influence, public paid, private rewarded, any such names would be more closely descriptive of the reality. Interesting how when something is purchased from the private sector the price always includes "development costs" yet when the private sector uses something developed with public funds, development costs are not included.
Tories tweaking their message 4:26pm on 23 Nov 2009 Reduced corporate taxes....what a surprise...I'm sure will apply to banks and investment firms. Wouldn't want to burden them with the responsbility for their crimes. We can just have the taxpayer pick this up. Maybe one day someone will have a light go off in their head and realize that it is the daily acts of consumption by the general public that sustains the economy, not this big business and big banking consolidation of wealth. If the economy is to gain any momentum it will take giving the public the funds in some direct manner for them to purchase goods, pay taxes and employ others. In case the economist haven't recognized, giving a lot of money to banks hasn't done a thing but make bankers richer. This is the old Reagan/Thacher trickle down economics and it failed, but has continued support among those who benefit from a concept that benefits the few at the disadvantage of the many. One day the people will regain control of the government....but for now expect more of the same to benefit the wealthy and shift more of the responsbility to the taxpayers. The private sector is not private, it runs the governments....the public is the only class without representation.
Spot the difference 4:12pm on 23 Nov 2009 What hasn't happened is any regulation that would prevent the banks or investment firms from doing this again. All the schemes and instruments devised by the criminal banking cabal are still in place. People seem to avoid that issue. The debt, owned by the taxpayers, created by the banks and investments firms is unevenly shared. Those who caused the problem continue to pay themsevles bonuses while unemployment rises. The wealthy investors tell the governments what is and what is not acceptable. The governments, representing the people, kow tow to the wealthy and slighter away with a contribution for the next election cycle. Both Parties are gutless cowards paying off the wealthy with favorable actions in exchange for crumbs from their table. What is theirs is theirs and what is yours is theirs. Welcome to the lastest twist on the conditions of the industrial revolutions....the technology is modern but the intent is the same.
EU latest: a triumph for democracy? 3:58pm on 23 Nov 2009 What has been termed the "global economy" is simply a businees cabal. This is the actions of bankers and energy providers to consolidate wealth and power. Nations have decided that rather than curb the power of the private sector it is more prudent to collectively defend themselves against these powerful private interests. This will not work nor can a governmental organizations regulate multi-national organizations or when they do the regulations are to the advantage of the multi-national companies and to the disadvantage of the public. More layers of government are not what is needed but rather stronger governments that can protect the citizens against the financial disceptions and undermining of economies as they move production to a continuing line of countries with cheap labor. They try to stand up but they have no backbones so they slither along the ground. Weakness has internal as well as external consequences.
Hacked climate e-mails and FOI 2:58pm on 23 Nov 2009 Academic institutions operate mostly in a different manner than a business or governmental disucssion. This is inquiry and question of results and finding. It should not be unusual for one academic to question the results or methods of another, this is the scientific investigation process. In the time of internet blogs and anti-this or that organizations it has become much more difficult to hold such discussions because those who have an intent of refuting things and not dicussing things will take anything out of context and try to make a case or say that some small statement refutes an entire body of work. Governments and the media disproportionately respond to the angry and small minded who obviously have a particular agenda and are not interested in a factual discussion. Arguments are good in pubs but not necessarily should be considered for policy development. Now, that said, the influence of the energy providers have no need for making any case about anything, they have the political power to get their way regardless of the science and take great joy in having the anti-groups make world-is-flat statements about climate change. Another distraction that will provide politicans with excuses for doing nothing and keeping the polluting companies in power. They will wait until a crisis occurs before anything will be done.....it is difficult to vote correctly when your hands are in the energy company pockets. The equation is that some people become very sick or die, but others do very well..considered a fair trade by those in power. Those opposed to climate change mitigation should take great comfort in knowing that governments have no history of taking care of the common people at the disadvantage of the wealthy and powerful, that is why history records revolutions.
Rudd upbeat on Copenhagen 2:30pm on 23 Nov 2009 This is another example of governments stating there is a major issue that needs to be addressed and coming up short on solutions because of politics and money. The Climate Change advocates have painted a future with negative implications for low shoreline areas, yet they will take no action to mitigate the problem. This is about the influence of coal and oil businesses. Like the bankers, they hold a great influence in the legislative bodies because of to who and how their political funds are distributed. This is the same in each of the major developed and developing countries countries. Will islands and peoples be placed in jeapordy for profit..of course they will. The main trait of any political leader is the ability to rationalize. Without considering the raisng sea-levels the polluants of coal cause health problems for many. Climate change is a future problem whereas health problems have been on-going so politicians would rather divert everyones attention to future problems that will not be addressed rather than immediate problems that will not be addressed. If the political leadership was really concerned with this matter one would see substantial funding for alternative fuels but the vested interest do not want this so funds are allocated to those alternavies that will produce a small amount of competition or will take many years to implement. This is about political power and how vested interest prevent progress for profits and how political systems are sometimes unable to hide the realities with rethoric. On the scale of what is important, people are way down the list.

I remember a movie once that had a news person, I think, yelling out of a window saying "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore", something like that. That is what it is going to take. Citizens kow tow to politicians and that is why they act the way they do. Look at what they do not what they say. Like the British selling opium to the Chinese, big business offers addictions of youth and glamor and status through senseless non-stop advertisements, and like in China, if necessary, they will have the governments enforce their degradation of societies and cultures. The potential of human development has been sidetracked by valueless greed and corrupt governments. Reformers show up in history and those in power are always the last to realize that they have exceeded their welcome. History produced the Buddha, Christ and many national leaders who dispelled corrupt governments. History also produced Hitler, Stalin, Tojo and Mao and the numerous dictators that currently abuse nations, so there is no assurance that the first stages of change will necessarily be what we would like. You can only control the life you have and point out the behaviors of others when they create harm in this world. The 5,000 years of civilization carry the 250,000 years of primative competition. Apes with better communication skills. The wise silverbacks are chased away by the younger males for sex and power. Not much has changed.

Japan invaded China in 1937, the war didn't start in Europe or the US. But of course the Chinese war dead were not even counted as part of the total for many years and the figures used are low.. 20 million or 40 million, what's the difference, unless you were Chinese.
