Anyway. I skimmed the article and then jumped to the bottom because I couldn't be bother to read the comments. I was going to put "this will only happen when children born in the last few years become adults because adults' brains are fixed". Then I went back to the top and I see that the beginning counters what I was going to say anyway. I think the fact that I couldn't be bothered to read the original article carefully shows that I'm wrong and he's right. If you reply to this then I won't read it anyway. No time. Sorry. I chuck my words into the cloud and then get on with something else.
Open post: Thursday, 10 September 2009 1:43pm on 14 Sep 2009 I missed the last but one (non-repeat) episode of Top Gear recently because I planned to watch it on series catch up and once the last programme had been shown (but before it expired after 7 days) the previous programmes disappeared. This was on Virgin Media, and I'm pretty sure it also went from online too.

Can the series catchup remain until 7 days after the last programme?

The Pros and Cons of Free 3:32pm on 02 Sep 2009 I think this is a very wise and balanced article. I like the bottom line. Of course it will work. If it didn't then artists couldn't sell and distribute and we couldn't get new music. So we'll find a way that does. It's a bit painful until it all settles down.

How much do they implicitly trust the people they share it with?
Do they think about how long it will be around for?

One of the probably most effective use of adverts is on Facebook where they pick up on things you've put on your profile to show you targeted ads.
It seems to me much more specific than the supposedly targeted ads that Google puts next to my emails on gmail.

I wonder how much people realise they are giving the advertisers (in terms of information) in this sort of situation, and how much they care?

In the last few weeks Facebook has taken away the ability to click on the "thumbs down" icon on their ads and say things like "not relevant". Was it because it was giving us too much power?
h2g2: an update 2:04pm on 24 Aug 2009 End of lunchbreak. No time for detailed comment. Glad to be consulted. Wonder what responsibility BBC has for care of a community, albeit on line. Can it be carefully transplanted elsewhere without damage?

I only want one bookshop - otherwise I have to search and compare, so long as it is competitive, which it is.
I only want one encyclopaedia, otherwise I have to look across several, so long as it is reasonably accurate.
I only want one social networking site, otherwise my friends might be on other ones, so long as I can control my privacy.

For where you have things that join people together for a purpose (sharing knowledge, buying/selling) it works best if there's only one. The one that emerges is generally pretty good, otherwise we'd be flocking elsewhere. Is that a problem though?

However it's interesting that there is far from one bulletin board/discussion forum/chat room site. In the old days there used to be one - USENET - but that doesn't scale. Imagine if all 10,000 amateur photographers (I made that number up) joined uk.rec.photography and posted one thing a year - that would be thirty posts a day to wade through, let alone to respond to.

Instead USENET lives on as google groups, but we also have Yahoo groups, and then what must be a million or so sites with discussion forums. It's interesting to me that on almost every discussion forum I see, whether it's Genesis fans, UK cable customers, .NET programmers, there's an "off topic" area. Because wherever people with an interest in X gather they also want to discuss general stuff.
revolution round-up: week two 4:38pm on 24 Jul 2009 Great minds think alike, with my comment on diversions and side-trips. What I would be disappointed to see though is fake browser windows with maximise/minimise and close buttons. Redo the web, don't just copy it.
Radio and Telly? That'd be Telio! 2:00pm on 22 Jul 2009 Sorry Steve, I watched the Chris Moyles one for a bit and the Switch one for longer. I've noticed that Chris and the team are deliberately doing things so that they can be seen, but I guess they are getting used to the novelty of it all. Mind you, when Scott Mills does his "what's occurring" challenges, or "what's Becky's forte", they are often quite visual, though there is a bit of audio to keep you interested.
