Who wins from an Orange iPhone? 1:00pm on 28 Sep 2009 I agree with the point about coverage, it's not all about tariffs. I frequently find browsing on the iPhone grinding to a halt -- not out in the wilds but in the centre of London -- because the network can't cope with the data traffic. I'm sure that there is a market out there for people who would pay a higher monthly subscription for a better data service. Another area for competition would be international roaming. I rarely turn on my iPhone when abroad because of the outrageous data charges. If Orange bung in unlimited international data for another £15 per month then they'd capture a lot of iPhone business users.
YouTube - the music returns 10:47am on 03 Sep 2009 Didn't I hear one of the members of the yoof panel say something like "I never watch YouTube any more because they took off the music videos"? Instant gratification -- the kids will be delighted!
Who is batting for file-sharing proposals? 7:39pm on 25 Aug 2009 Lord Munchausen of Hartlepool & Foy certainly doesn't "get the internet" but then nor do any of the other unelected plutocrats in his department.

By the way, if you want a better conspiracy theory, remember that it was Munchausen who gave Mrs T's EU rebate money back, so perhaps today's media storm over unauthorised downloading kept something else away from the BBC phone ins? This, for example...

Anonymous on the internet 7:06pm on 25 Aug 2009 Some years ago, I was posting on a blog about credit cards (that's how dull my life is) and I received a very disturbing e-mail (in my personal inbox) going on about how credit cards violated Allah's law and how I was going to be beaten up for advocating interest fees etc etc. Since then, I have always used different pseudonyms in different circumstances.

There is nothing wrong in a blog host disclosing a blogger's identity on receipt of a court order -- that's how it should be. What will happen, particularly because of the publicity afforded the case of the policeman, is that many people will feel uncomfortable posting about their experiences in various organisations and that will not help the public good. But people who do want to post anonymously will be driven to use offshore services etc.

The net result: we won't hear valid, important, informed views from nurses, teachers, bankers, soliders, journalists but we will hear the views of geeks and nutters.

The solution should be to reform Britain's notorious libel laws and embed a basic right to anonymous free speech.

The Blog Is Dead.....oh no it isn't, oh yes it is... 09:11am on 18 Jul 2009 But surely Athenian ideal democracy excluded hoi polloi, women, slaves etc? Surely this isn't what the BBC wants? The problem with democracy is that it enfranchises a lot of very dim people: Nick's solution is good (ignore them) but I wonder how we might extend it to general elections?

The record companies are in the position of canal owners trying to the block the development of railways: yes, the new technology might be bad for _them_ but the government's job is pass laws to the common good, not to defend the exclusive rights of producer groups (like, for example, farmers).

Stephen Fry is right to point out that the content industries have taken the wrong approach from the beginning.
Can Digital Britain top the league? 07:37am on 17 Jun 2009 The Prime Mentalist has given up. He told two blatant lies before breakfast yesterday (in The Times): broadband is as important as water (it isn't) and UK will "lead the world" (it won't). But the MSM don't even remark on the pathological mendacity any more. If Brown comes on TV on Saturday saying that he has been communicating with alien civilisations or that the moon has been conclusively proved to be made of cheese, it won't make the front page of the Sundays. The whole Digital Britain bandwagon proves only that there is no vision for the future at all.
A Budget for broadband? 7:37pm on 22 Apr 2009 So "virtually" all the country already has broadband. Great, job done, target will definitely be met in 2012. As for the rest of us paying for second home owners to get broadband to their cottages in Wales.... not so sure this should be a government priority. I agree with the more technology-centric next generation: if you're going to subsidise something, then subsidise LTE or whatever.
