McNabb thrives despite tough Philadelphia love 12:11pm on 23 Dec 2009 I have never liked the Eagles, being a Redskins fan that is to be expected I suppose. But you have to be impressed with how they have consistently made it to the Play-offs, from the extremely difficult NFC East this decade. Andy Reid just needs to win a superbowl to be a sure thing to be inducted as a Hall of Fame coach.
Saying that this year is once again going to be one of dissapointment. They will have to win on the road to make the Superbowl and unless the Saints or Vikings have a major choking session they won't be able to pull it off.
Controversial Vick returns to the NFL 5:16pm on 24 Sep 2009 I have never been a great fan of Vick. I prefer my quarterbacks to be passers not rushers. However he is an exceptional player, and with the evolution of the 'Wildcat Offense' he is tailor made to run that to perfection. I am amazed how many teams passed him up given how prevalent the Wildcat is going to be this year.
As for his criminal past. Its certainly not the most pleasant of crimes that he was convicted with, but he served his time so should have been allowed to play and the NFL were correct to reinstate him IMO.
On a different tangent. What happened to MNF? I checked all my TV schedules (SKY, BBC, 5, ESPN) and could find no sign of it being aired. If it was and I was just blind could somebody post which channel it is being shown on. Thanks.
Long live Autumn Sundays 10:21pm on 08 Sep 2009 Pre-season is absolutely no indication of how a team will perform in the regular season!! Case in point last seasons 4-0 Lions who didn't exactly maintain that form in the regular season. Rosters haven't been cut, coaches don't concern theirselves with schemes for individual teams and main starters don't play a great deal of downs. The games are just elaborate training sessions.
The joy of the NFL is that you can try and pick an eventual winner but you are very likely to be wrong. No offense Nick but no chance the Giants win the Superbowl. Eli Manning just plain ain't good enough!!
Even though I will no doubt be wrong, my pick for the 2 teams playing in the superbowl is The Vikings vs The Patriots. I expect Brady to show once again why he is perhaps the best QB of all time (my fantasy team certainly hopes so) and a playmaking QB is exactly what the Vikings needed to become an elite side. Sure Favre is passed his best but he is still good enough that defence's won't be able to fill the box which will give Peterson the chance to dominate and run the Vikings all the way to superbowl glory.
Ghost of Owens inspires Bolt 1:02pm on 17 Aug 2009 utterly breathtaking performance. I have enjoyed watching the race again and again as well as analysing the data of Split times etc. Will these records of Bolts be broken? For sure I feel he can definitely run faster but whether another man will come close in the next 10-20 years I think is extremely unlikely. They could feasibly last forever. However putting aside Bolt the other times are also astonishing and highlight an advancement in Sprinting in the last 4-5 years (for whatever reasons.) 9.71 in 2nd and even 9.84 looking slow in 3rd are exceptional times and are a good step ahead of recent years. Powell beat Gay's winning time from 2 years ago in Osaka but was only 3rd!! I often wonder if the likes of Mo Greene would have been able to run faster had he been pushed by athletes running in the 9.7's regularly?
As for Caribbean athletes excelling its no great surprise. Johnson, Donavon Bailey and Linford Christie are really Jamaicans but represented other country's. The peoples that populated the caribbean islands were most times the strongest of the slaves taken from west africa which leads to them having the best genetic stock. Of all the men to run sub 10 secs only 1 has been of non west african geneology, Patrick Johnson a Aborigine/irish blend.
Still Bolt is head and shoulders the greatest of them all.
Blatter blunders while Wada walks the beat 1:54pm on 13 May 2009 I don't really see much point in FIFA even being a part of WADA at all let alone feeling the need to proscribe to their draconian 24/7 drug testing policy. Is it essential for football to be part of the Olympics? Hardly. Just like the major American sports, nobody will stop watching Football because they are concerned that it doesn't adhere to international doping rules, its just to big and to ingrained in society to be affected. Ditch WADA and if football has a concern about doping then test in house, afterall I am sure football could come up with a bigger budget than WADA can manage for testing anyway.
Incidentaly there are plenty of banned substances that are of great benifit to the modern footballer. Sure they can't make you kick a ball better but the modern game isn't just about how well you can kick a ball.
Low-key start to Brazilian championship 10:41am on 11 May 2009 I am delighted to read that Ronaldo is finding form again even though it is the swan song of his career. For me he is the best centre forward of the last 15 years. Obviously he has suffered considerably from injuries but in his heyday 96-98 he WAS unplayable. I remarked whistfully to my girfriend as Eto'o (the most over-rated player in the world) spurned another chance ' how many goals would Ronaldo of scored if he'd being playing for this Barca side?' I think 50 easy!!!
As for Adriano I never thought that much of him but do remember the cannon of a left foot goal he scored against Greece in the 2005 confederations cup. Alas that was as good as he got.
Man Utd pile on agony for Wenger 2:36pm on 06 May 2009 I was very impressed with Man Utd last night, though I was pretty scunnered that they ended the evenings entertainment so quickly, I was pretty bored by half 9!!! Alas, I have never been able to turn off a football match that i have started watching.
Feel sorry for Fletcher, especially given the dignified manner he accepted his undeserved punishment. Can you picture the chelsea team hounding the ref if it had been one of their players unfairly red carded? It does seem bizarre that the decision can't be appealed. The ref panel review's the game, see's that it wasn't a pen and therefor couldn't have been punished with a red card, said red card is then rescinded. Hardly complicarted!!!
I said previously that I wanted a Barca v Arsenal final however after last nights game I don't think we'll have to many complaints about a Man U v Barca final. It will be interesting to see what tactic fergie adopts in a one off game against the great Barca? Does he believe enough in his team to have a go at them? I hope so, as then we may have a classic final. What about Chelsea the blue brigade cry? Sorry guys your only chance was to score an away goal, your anti football played you right out of this tie. Prediction for tonight: Barca score early, chelsea have to come out of their shell and are ripped to bits and get what their Nou camp (Camp Nou) negativity deserves.
Of course the gods of football are fickle to say the least so i won't be putting my house on it Ricky Hatton style.
Cech gives Chelsea final hope 10:47am on 29 Apr 2009 Having thoroughly enjoyed watching Barca play all season i was looking forward to finally getting to see an 'English' team drubbed in the CL again (its been a long time since Man U were thumped at the Nou camp in 94!!!)
Alas it wasn't to be. Chelsea parked the bus and barca didn't have the final pass or the finishing to merit a victory last night. Some may feel they can commend chelsea for their performance last night but to be honest i can't find anything to laud about it. Parking the bus is a simple tactic but its effectiveness is usually dependent on the other sides luck in front of goal, better finishing by eto'o and bojan and chelsea would have been facing an unrecoverable 2-0 defecit. Parking the bus is a fair tactic for lower league sides but a side like chelsea, which cost a fortune to put together and is full of supposedly world class players should surely be able to play a defensive yet counter attacking formation against any team in the world!!! Last nights complete surrendering of possesion to barcelona was embarassing to behold and certainly does no credit to'english' football.
Barca were poor last night, perhaps feeling the strain of all the matches they have played since the turn of the year, but it would be a very naive chelsea fan who would expect barca not to score at stamford bridge if they are given the lions share of the ball again. 2 bad games in a row from Barca isn't likely.
Those that want an entertaining CL final must surely hope that Barca and Arsenal meet?!!?
Pitch imperfect 5:29pm on 20 Apr 2009 Semi's are usually poor but the 2 played over the weekend really took the biscuit. Some of the most inept football to ever grace a major venue. Very glad I will be sunning myself in the tropics when the final is on or I'd probably feel obliged to watch what will inevitably be another dull match.
As for the EPL my girlfriend did the BBC predictor and had 'Boro and Newcastle going down with WBA and unfortunately for you Robbo I can't seem to fault her logic.
The big attraction of the Libertadores 12:23pm on 20 Apr 2009 Having just subscribed to the channel that shows the Libertadores i am definitely looking forward to watching a cup competition that throws up unexpected winners on a regular basis. It will be a nice change from the monotony of the CL, which has become so predictable that the group stages aren't worth watching anymore as the big clubs are now so dominant year in year out.
Whether the football is better will be worth finding out. I also haven't picked a team to root for yet.
