Is Owen still worth a gamble? 12:50pm on 15 Jun 2009 There is a lack of humility in football (sorry, I'm stating the bleedin' obvious there). Shouldn't Owen, and indeed the other "stars", pledge their loyalty to Newcastle for one more season, and help them win promotion? Owen has banked his £120k per week for four years, and the net result is relegation. Can he not take a pay-cut appropriate to the Championship, and then score whatever goals are needed to get them up? Perhaps I am too principled, but if it were me I would feel a deep sense of shame that I have taken such vast amounts of money only to produce in the negative.
Hata la vista, Cristiano! 2:11pm on 12 Jun 2009 America's Los Angeles Times took a more quirky look at the transfer by jokingly saying: "The hair-gel industry in north-west England suffered a catastrophic blow on Thursday in a world-record sports transaction after which the soccer marvel Cristiano Ronaldo seemed Spain-bound."
Experience matters in management stakes 4:09pm on 20 May 2009 I suspect that over the next few seasons we'll see fewer managers being sacked only months into the job. More often than not it doesn't work. For every Blackburn that survives after sacking a manager, there are several clubs (Derby County springs to mind, and Leeds Utd) that go on to worse performances and eventual relegation. Also, it's expensive to terminate a manager's contract, and clubs will be wary of this additional expense during the recession.
Life's just not fair 3:54pm on 20 May 2009 Just a note on Blackburn. A couple of months back Sam Allardyce was faced with a dillema not suffered by many managers in the league: no strikers. Santa-Cruz was injured, as were McCarthy, Roberts, and even Diouf was out for a few weeks. Allardyce tried something very unsophisticated: not only a big man up front to whack high balls to but a big man who was a central defender, not a striker. This might have had the "purists" up in arms, and the football was ugly. But the strategy worked. Blackburn Rovers are in the Premier League for another season, and have a chance to convalesce their attacking players. Moral is: football, indeed any sport, is about winning within the rules of the game, regardless of the tactics employed.
Jeers and Booze 2:03pm on 14 May 2009 Cannot see the point of the debate, or the fuss it has caused. How often does a Premiership footballer get caught "one over the eight" these days? Not often. Not in public, anyway. Gazza was high profile, but he stopped playing years ago, as did Merson and Adams. Thinking about it, this season I can't recall any revelations of drunk footballers before the Bendtner/King stories broke...

Daylight Droggery! 09:35am on 08 May 2009 Sick and tired of self-righteous "Rugby League / Union fans" coming on to football blogs and stating that all football players are yobs and hooligans and that a "jolly good leaf should be taken out of rugger player's books, old chap..." Go to Google. Type in "rugby player charged", and hit search. See how many of these exemplary sportsmen are charged with assault, sexual violence, drunken thuggery, etc, etc, etc...As for Chelsea: for good or evil, they entertained us, didn't they? And that's all that counts in these dull days of economic depression.
