I am surprised there have been no comments in the 3 hours since this has been posted. You boys normally post within seconds. Anyone would think it's your job...

Perhaps the subject matter has silenced the ExxonMobil paid bloggers?

I wonder if the contract of employment states that they're not allowed to comment on anything that mentions the company.

I've always wanted to know why all these climate sceptics secretly in the pay of big oil, that post on articles like this, have appalling grammar and spelling.

Can anyone shed any light on this? And is it just me that has noticed this?

Surely no correlation with their intellect...

Hitler: the green movement's German shepherd? 4:31pm on 19 May 2009 It may be possible that the Nazis promoted various green ethics, for whatever reason, though attributing them as the main reason for Germany's head start in the renewables race is probably a little far fetched.

Could the nature of the post war government, being mixed member proportional representation, have had more influence in this area? Germany is one of very few countries in Europe and the World that represents marginal political parties (i.e. green groups) because of the structure of their electoral system.
Beaming green energy down from space: crazy, or the final frontier? 4:17pm on 19 May 2009 Sounds feasible in theory, though one hell of an infrastructure to set up and maintain.

The Concentrating Solar Power plants (also known as Solar Thermal) you refer to in the Mojave desert article has a tiny set up cost in comparison. They can be extended in blocks of prefabs easily enough, and maintenance is minimal.

CSP combined with canals of sea water can desalinate the water and produce electricity simultaneously. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, there are none of these desalinating CSP plants in existence yet.

However, CSP sounds a lot more probable and literally, down to earth.

When there is no sun and wind, open the sluice gates and harvest the hydro power. No need to burn anything, carbon neutral or otherwise.
'Green' replaced as a BP brand value 2:51pm on 01 May 2009 The reason big oil is pulling out of renewables is apparently because they're financially unviable. It wouldn't do to have green objectives and then not invest in any renewable energy. A logical (market driven) conclusion.

However, Shell have pulled out of renewables and yet are still investing in oil sands despite them being financially unviable too:

Government should be stepping in with subsidies to tempt big oil to the renewables table, if they can't build the infrastructure themselves. This is a market failure with devastating consequences.
Overpopulation: Maybe we actually need more people? 2:39pm on 22 Apr 2009 My original point was that this blog is overly sensationalist and provocative.

You're quite right that no Western nation should be demanding population control from the third world, as it's patronising amd hypocritical. However, showing people the potential increase in their standard of living (more food to go round, more money to spend on the children/child they do have) by having less children is surely acceptable. Population control is not about murdering babies in the wombs of their mothers. Through education and better governance, a reduction to a sustainable population for each nation can be done in the fairest way.

Your last point about the potential genius born out of another billion people, that could solve the crisis that same billion people would cause, is quite frankly, preposterous. Why we can't use the minds of our present population, rather than put any ounce of hope in the next generation, I don't know.

I cannot fathom your logic there.

UK govt subsidises electric cars, but are they backing the wrong horseless carriage? 5:09pm on 16 Apr 2009 Reasonable until the last point, which is ridiculous, as the hydrogen argument is.

The process of using electricity to extract hydrogen from water is too inefficient to make the technology worth while. Why create hydrogen using electricity through electrolysis, losing energy in the process, when you can just use the electricity to power a car in the first place?

It's all very nice to talk of the beauty of motors, but in the face of a huge energy deficit, hydrogen just won't be practical for Britain.

The only car that should be backed, if any car should, is the compressed air car. Most efficient of all, recharges in minutes, no special recharging stations needed, and no dangerous exploding tanks.

Whether hydrogen cars will be more popular than electric ones? Too early to tell. Really, they shouldn't be backing any type of car, but if they have to, it's my view the government has chosen correctly between the two technologies stated here.
